Chapter 11 - THE FULTON STREET FILE

Luca Moretti had spent eight years believing the Fulton Street ambush was unfinished family business.
Now he understood it had been something else.
A cleanup.
The brass key had mattered.
Someone had followed him.
Someone had waited at the hospital.
And Della had unknowingly handed the missing evidence directly into that person's hands.
She looked devastated.
"I gave it to him."
"You were trying to help."
"I gave him the key."
"You were twenty-three years old with my blood all over your clothes."
"Luca."
"You did nothing wrong."
His voice left no room for argument.
Della looked away.
Detective Ellis arrived before dawn.
They showed her Owen's recording.
She watched without interruption.
When it ended, she asked Luca one question.
"What is the Fulton Street file?"
"A sealed internal investigation."
"Where?"
"Moretti Holdings legal archive."
"Who has access?"
"Three people."
Della already knew what was coming.
Luca.
Sebastian.
And the company's general counsel.
Vincent Carrow.
The same attorney Luca had trusted for eighteen years.
They went to Moretti headquarters at sunrise.
The legal archive occupied a secured floor beneath the executive offices.
Carrow was already waiting.
Sixty-two.
Silver hair.
Expensive suit.
Calm eyes.
"You're making a mistake," he told Luca.
"Open the archive."
"Police need a warrant."
Mara held one up.
Carrow's expression did not change.
The Fulton Street file was inside Cabinet 18.
Luca opened it himself.
Photographs.
Bank transfers.
Port manifests.
Interview notes.
Then Della noticed an envelope taped beneath the folder.
Her name was written across it.
DELLA MARSH.
Everyone stopped.
"That's impossible," she whispered.
Luca opened it.
Inside was an old photograph.
Fulton Street.
Rain.
An ambulance.
Della standing outside the hospital eight years earlier.
Someone had photographed her that night.
Behind the photograph was a note.
SHE SAW TOO MUCH.
Della's skin went cold.
Mara turned toward Carrow.
"Who accessed this file?"
Carrow stared at the photograph.
"For years?"
"Yes."
"Answer."
Carrow slowly removed his glasses.
"Conrad Vance wasn't trying to find Luca after the shooting."
Luca stepped closer.
"What?"
"He was trying to find her."
Everyone looked at Della.
Carrow continued.
"You disappeared from the address you gave the hospital three days later."
Della remembered.
Her landlord had sold the building.
She had moved suddenly.
Carrow looked almost relieved.
"That may be the only reason you're alive."
Luca's voice dropped.
"How do you know?"
Carrow stared at him.
"Because your father ordered me to hide her identity."
Luca froze.
"My father?"
Carrow nodded.
"Antonio Moretti knew exactly who shot you."
"Then why didn't he tell me?"
"Because the man who ordered it had enough evidence to destroy your entire family."
Luca's face hardened.
"Conrad?"
Carrow shook his head.
"No."
"Conrad was only the middleman."

Before anyone could ask another question, the building alarms began screaming.
Smoke poured from beneath the archive door.
