Chapter 3 – The Woman Who Knew Too Much

Hours later...
Police investigators searched every room inside the Carter estate.
Emily finally explained everything.
Earlier that afternoon she had been dusting Daniel's private conference room.
The door had remained slightly open.
Inside, two men discussed payment.
One voice belonged to the dead waiter.
The other...
She never saw.
Only heard.
"He said the wife doesn't suspect anything."
Daniel looked toward Sophia.
She immediately answered.
"They obviously meant me."
Emily slowly shook her head.
"No."
"The voice said..."
"...she already agreed."
The room became silent.
Sophia stared at Emily in disbelief.
"How dare you."
Daniel didn't speak.
Instead...
He handed investigators the ballroom surveillance recordings.
One detective returned nearly an hour later.
"We found something."
Everyone gathered around the monitor.
The footage showed Sophia minutes before dinner.
She wasn't speaking with guests.
She wasn't greeting donors.
She was secretly handing an envelope to the waiter.
Sophia's voice trembled.
"That was a donation."
The detective zoomed in.
Cash.
Thousands of dollars.
Then another camera angle appeared.
Sophia whispered only four words.
"After the champagne toast."
Daniel felt every piece of his world collapse.
He looked at the woman he'd loved for six years.
"Tell me..."
"...none of this is true."
May you like
Sophia remained silent.
That silence answered everything.
