CHAPTER 4 — THE WEDDING THAT NEVER FINISHED

The ballroom glittered with impossible luxury.
Crystal chandeliers.
Gold-trimmed invitations.
Two hundred of New York’s most powerful guests.
Veronica stood at the altar in a white designer gown, smiling like nothing in the world could touch her.
Ethan stood beside her.
But not really beside her.
He was distant.
Still.
Watching.
Then—
The doors opened.
Not dramatically.
Not loudly.
Just slowly.
Rosa walked in first.
Then Lily.
Barefoot again.
Holding her rabbit.
And finally—
Ethan’s expression changed for the first time.
Veronica turned.
Confused.
Then annoyed.
“What is this?”
Lily didn’t wait.
She pointed.
Small finger.
Straight at Veronica.
And said, very softly—
“She called me dirty.”
The room froze.
Guests stopped breathing.
Veronica’s smile disappeared instantly.
“That’s ridiculous—she’s just a maid’s child—”
But Ethan stepped forward.
One step.
Then another.
And for the first time in his entire life of control, power, and silence—
He raised his voice.
“Enough.”
The word echoed through the ballroom.
Veronica turned to him.
“Ethan… don’t be emotional.”
He looked at her.
Really looked at her.
Then said calmly:
“You spoke to her like she was nothing.”
A pause.
“I saw it.”
Gasps in the crowd.
Veronica’s face stiffened.
“You’re choosing a child over me?”
Ethan didn’t answer immediately.
Instead, he walked past her.
To Lily.
He knelt.
Same height.
Same silence as before.
And gently said:
“You are not dirty.”
Lily blinked.
May you like
For the first time that day…
She believed him.
