CHAPTER 3 — WHEN DENIAL BREAKS

The garden party collapsed into silence so heavy it felt physical.
Even the wind seemed to hesitate.
The wife’s breathing became uneven now.
Not dramatic.
Not loud.
Just human.
Unstable.
She turned slightly toward the guests, as if looking for someone—anyone—to interrupt reality for her.
But no one did.
Because everyone had heard it.
The older woman pulled the children back further.
The boy’s bunny slipped slightly from his grip.
The young girl stared at the wife like she was seeing her for the first time.
Michael took one slow step forward.
Not threatening.
Not chasing.
Just closing distance.
The wife finally spoke, voice thin:
“Why do you have that recording?”
Michael paused.
Then answered:
“Because I stopped trusting silence.”
A beat.
Then another.
The wife’s lips parted again—but nothing came out.
May you like
For the first time, she looked afraid not of Michael…
…but of what she might have already become in his memory.
