CHAPTER 1 — THE SOUND NO ONE WAS SUPPOSED TO HEAR

The golden light made everything look innocent.

Too innocent.

Michael stood still in the center of the courtyard, his arm extended, holding the phone like a weapon that didn’t need bullets.

The audio continued to play.

A voice.

Calm. Familiar.

Too familiar.

The wife in white didn’t move at first. She only stared at the waveform like it was something she could deny into disappearing.

But her breath changed.

Just slightly.

A fraction deeper.

A fraction faster.

Behind them, the garden party had stopped pretending to exist. Forks hung mid-air. A glass trembled in someone’s hand but no one dared set it down.

The older woman instinctively pulled the children closer.

The little girl’s eyes were already wet.

The boy squeezed his bunny like it was the only thing keeping the world from breaking apart.

Then—

The recording shifted.

A second voice entered.

And everything Michael had been holding inside his chest for years finally stopped being a secret.

The wife whispered:

“No… that’s not possible.”

But Michael didn’t look at her.

He only said one thing.

Quiet.

Controlled.

May you like

Final:

“You chose the wrong version of the truth to live with.”
