Chapter 1 – The Bruises That Could Not Lie

Nathan Blackwood had built billion-dollar companies with calm decisions and ruthless precision.

But nothing in his life prepared him for the sight beneath those white hospital blankets.

His wife, Amelia, tried to pull the sheet back over her legs.

"Please..." she whispered through trembling lips. "Don't."

He gently stopped her hand.

His fingers hovered over the bruises without touching them.

They stretched from her ankles to her thighs.

Some were fresh.

Some had already begun turning yellow.

Others formed perfect fingerprints.

Nathan's breathing became uneven.

"Who did this?"

Amelia stared at the ceiling.

Silence.

His voice cracked.

"Amelia... what did they do to you?"

She closed her eyes.

"I fell."

Nathan slowly turned toward his mother.

Victoria Blackwood stood beside the window, perfectly dressed in an expensive beige suit, pearl earrings, and white gloves.

She answered before he could ask.

"Pregnant women become clumsy."

Nathan didn't speak.

Instead, he walked toward his mother until only inches separated them.

"You've seen these bruises before."

Her face remained composed.

"I've visited her every day."

"So you knew."

"I assumed they were from pregnancy."

Nathan's jaw tightened.

Then his eyes noticed something else.

Around Amelia's wrist was a faint red mark.

Not a bruise.

A restraint mark.

His entire body froze.

He rushed to the opposite side of the bed.

"Amelia..."

She quickly pulled the blanket over her hands.

Too late.

The same marks circled both wrists.

Nathan looked at the nurse.

"When did these appear?"

The young nurse immediately looked terrified.

"I... I don't know, sir."

Victoria answered instead.

"She's emotionally unstable. Sometimes she struggles during treatment."

Nathan looked back at Amelia.

"What treatment?"

Nobody answered.

The room became painfully quiet.

Then an elderly cleaning woman entered carrying fresh towels.

She stopped the instant she saw Nathan.

Her eyes filled with fear.

She looked at Victoria.

Victoria gave the tiniest shake of her head.

It lasted less than a second.

But Nathan saw it.

The cleaner lowered her eyes.

"I'm sorry."

She turned to leave.

Nathan stepped in front of the door.

"No."

His voice echoed through the room.

"You know something."

The woman began shaking.

"I'll lose my job."

Nathan reached into his wallet and placed several thousand dollars on the nearby table.

"You won't."

Victoria suddenly interrupted.

"How dare you question hospital employees over family matters."

The cleaner burst into tears.

"They tied her down."

Everyone froze.

Victoria's face lost every trace of color.

The woman sobbed uncontrollably.

"They said she kept asking to call her husband... Mrs. Blackwood ordered the sedatives... She said the baby had to stay calm..."

Nathan slowly turned.

His mother stood perfectly still.

Only her trembling fingers betrayed her.

Then Amelia whispered the words that shattered the room.

"They weren't trying to calm the baby."

Nathan looked down.

"They were waiting..."

May you like

Her voice broke.

"...for me to lose it."
