Chapter 1 – The Woman Who Was Never Allowed to Leave

The silence inside Castillo Manor became unbearable.

Every servant stood frozen, unable to breathe.

Vivian Moretti slowly lowered her wine glass and forced a smile that no longer reached her eyes.

"Darling," she laughed softly, "there's obviously been a misunderstanding."

Alejandro never looked at her.

His eyes remained locked on Elena.

She looked thinner than he remembered. Her once elegant chestnut hair had been cut unevenly. Her hands were rough, scarred from years of scrubbing stone floors and polishing furniture that legally belonged to her.

Most heartbreaking of all...

She looked afraid of him.

Not because she didn't recognize him.

Because she no longer believed anyone could save her.

Alejandro stepped forward carefully.

"Elena..."

She instinctively stepped backward.

That single movement shattered him.

Three years earlier, Elena would have run into his arms.

Now she flinched as though kindness itself had become dangerous.

Vivian interrupted.

"She's unstable, Alejandro. The poor woman wandered in months ago. She insists she's your wife."

Alejandro slowly turned.

"What did you just say?"

Vivian maintained her composure.

"You've been grieving for years. You're emotional."

Alejandro looked toward the household staff.

"Who hired this maid?"

Nobody answered.

Vivian answered for them.

"I did."

"Who authorized it?"

"I manage the estate."

"You manage it," Alejandro said quietly, "because my wife disappeared."

His voice became colder.

"But she never disappeared."

The servants exchanged terrified glances.

An elderly housekeeper suddenly began crying.

"I... I can't lie anymore."

Vivian's expression changed instantly.

"Maria."

The warning in her voice was unmistakable.

But Maria stepped forward anyway.

"I'm sorry, Mr. Castillo."

She looked at Elena with tears streaming down her face.

"They brought her here almost three years ago."

Alejandro felt his blood freeze.

"What do you mean... brought?"

Maria swallowed hard.

"She arrived unconscious."

The room erupted in whispers.

Alejandro grabbed the edge of a table to steady himself.

Maria continued.

"Miss Vivian told us Mrs. Castillo had suffered brain damage after an accident."

Vivian shouted.

"Enough!"

But Maria refused to stop.

"She said Mrs. Castillo couldn't remember who she was... that keeping her hidden was for her own protection."

Alejandro looked back at Elena.

Elena slowly rolled up the sleeve of her uniform.

Dark bruises covered her arm.

Then she whispered words that would haunt him forever.

"I remembered who I was..."

She paused.

"They punished me every time I said your name."

No one in the mansion spoke again.

Alejandro removed his suit jacket and gently wrapped it around Elena's shoulders.

Then he faced Vivian.

"You have exactly one opportunity to tell me the truth."

Vivian smiled.

"You don't have any proof."

Alejandro smiled back.

"I own every camera this house has ever installed."

For the first time...

Vivian looked afraid.
