CHAPTER 4: THE STAR RETURNS HOME

The Ashford estate reopened for the first time in twenty-five years.
But it was no longer a symbol of tragedy.
It was a place of return.
Rosie stood at the entrance, hesitant, wearing the same necklace she had always had—but now it felt different.
Heavy.
Real.
Victoria walked beside her, silent but present.
No press.
No guests.
Just mother and daughter.
Inside, the burned nursery had been preserved exactly as it was found.
Victoria stopped in front of a small scorched rocking chair.
“I used to sit here… waiting for you to wake up from naps,” she said quietly.
Rosie’s fingers tightened around the star pendant.
“Why don’t I remember any of this?”
Victoria turned toward her.
“Because someone didn’t just take you from me,” she said. “They erased the path back.”
Rosie’s breath trembled.
“And what if I never become who you think I am?”
Victoria stepped closer.
Her voice softened.
“Then I will learn who you are now,” she said. “Because I didn’t lose a daughter twice just to find her once.”
A long silence followed.
Then, slowly…
Rosie took a step forward.
And then another.
Until she was close enough that Victoria could finally reach out.
Victoria hesitated—like touching something fragile that might break reality itself.
Then she placed her hand gently on Rosie’s cheek.
Warm.
Real.
Alive.
Rosie closed her eyes.
A tear slipped down her face.
“I don’t remember you,” she whispered.
Victoria smiled through tears.
“Then I will spend the rest of my life making sure you don’t have to remember alone.”
Outside, the wind moved through the broken estate like it had been waiting for this moment for decades.
And for the first time in twenty-five years…
The Ashford name was no longer defined by loss.
May you like
It was defined by return.
THE END.
