CHAPTER 5 — The Family We Chose

One year later...
The courthouse steps were warm beneath the spring sun.
Roger accepted a plea agreement.
Paige received probation, mandatory counseling, and permanently lost custody rights until family court completed its review.
Diane never apologized.
Not once.
Joanna stopped waiting.
Across town...
Life became quieter.
Marcus opened a small architectural studio.
Joanna began volunteering with children recovering from family violence.
Every Thursday, Ivy helped decorate the waiting room with new drawings.
She always signed them the same way.
Love makes a family.
One afternoon a little girl arrived carrying fresh bruises.
She refused to speak.
Ivy quietly sat beside her.
Without saying anything, she removed the pale blue ribbon she had kept since that terrible night.
The ribbon still had a tiny stain where tears had dried.
She tied it gently around the girl's wrist.
"My mom says..."
Ivy smiled.
"...the bravest people are the ones who ask for help."
The little girl smiled back.
Outside, Marcus watched through the window.
He slipped his hand into Joanna's.
"We lost a family."
Joanna leaned against him.
"No."
She watched Ivy laughing with the other child.
"We escaped one."
For the first time in years...
The word family no longer sounded like something to survive.
May you like
It sounded like home.
