CHAPTER 2 — The Screen Never Blinked

Nobody breathed.
The only sound inside Hollow Creek Country Club was the soft hum of the air-conditioning and Ivy's uneven breathing from the marble floor.
The country club manager didn't raise his voice.
"Nobody leaves."
His words carried farther than shouting ever could.
He held the tablet with both hands. The security footage filled the screen.
The ballroom.
Table Seven.
Every angle.
Every second.
The recording had no emotion.
It simply told the truth.
There was Paige smiling while removing her belt.
Roger stepping forward.
Diane grabbing Joanna's wrist.
Marcus trying to reach his daughter before two men restrained him.
Then—
The first strike.
Even without sound, everyone in the ballroom flinched.
The manager looked at Roger.
"Sir..."
His tone remained professional.
"...would you like me to continue?"
Roger swallowed.
His face had gone completely white.
"No."
The manager touched the screen anyway.
Another camera appeared.
This one overlooked the dance floor.
Roger could be seen forcing Ivy onto the marble while Paige lifted the belt again.
Another angle showed Aunt Felicity throwing ice water over an eight-year-old child.
Several guests quietly covered their mouths.
One woman stood up so abruptly that her wineglass shattered against the table.
"My God..."
Marcus finally broke free.
No one tried stopping him this time.
He dropped beside Ivy.
"It's okay, sweetheart."
His hands shook as he carefully lifted her into his arms.
"I've got you."
Ivy buried her face against his shoulder.
She wasn't crying anymore.
That frightened Joanna more than the screams had.
Children stopped crying when something inside them stopped believing adults would help.
Joanna slowly stood.
She looked around the room.
Fifty faces.
Business partners.
Neighbors.
Friends.
Every single one had watched.
"You all saw it."
Nobody answered.
"You watched my child beg for help."
Silence.
Then an elderly woman from Table Five quietly stood.
"I called 911."
Heads turned.
She continued,
"I did it after the first strike."
The manager nodded.
"They're already on their way."
May you like
For the first time in forty years...
Roger Crawford looked afraid.
