Chapter 2: The Boardroom Reckoning

The emergency board meeting began at exactly 9:00 p.m.
No one dared arrive late.
The top floor of Langford Tower overlooked the glittering skyline, but no one admired the view. Twelve directors sat around the walnut conference table in complete silence, each clutching the confidential email that had summoned them.
MANDATORY ATTENDANCE. IMMEDIATE VOTING SESSION.
Victoria stormed into the room still wearing the emerald gown from the gala.
"This meeting is illegal," she snapped. "Who authorized this?"
The answer came before anyone spoke.
The elevator doors opened.
Claire Hale walked in, holding Sophie's hand.
She wore the same simple navy dress from the museum. No diamonds. No designer handbag. No security detail.
She didn't need any of them.
Every director stood.
Victoria frowned.
"What are you all doing?"
Richard Chen, chairman of the board, slowly adjusted his glasses.
"We're greeting the majority shareholder."
The words struck Victoria harder than a slap.
"What?"
Richard placed a thick folder in front of her.
"Mrs. Hale controls fifty-one percent of Langford Global through Hale Capital Holdings."
Victoria laughed nervously.
"Impossible."
Claire calmly opened another folder.
"Your grandfather knew your father would destroy the company."
She slid a yellowed contract across the polished table.
"Twenty-three years ago, he sold controlling shares to my father under a confidential succession agreement."
Victoria's smile vanished.
"My father... never told me."
"No," Claire replied. "Because if he had, your family would've lost control years ago."
Silence swallowed the room.
Then Claire looked directly at the board.
"I move for the immediate removal of Victoria Langford as Executive Vice President."

Every hand except Victoria's went up.
The vote was unanimous.
