Chapter 17 - Bring the Bride

Celeste was brought to the estate under armed escort.

No makeup.

No designer dress.

No diamond ring.

For the first time, she looked like what she was.

A frightened thirty-four-year-old woman who had finally run out of disguises.

Adrian stood across the foyer.

They looked at each other.

Neither spoke.

Naomi watched from the staircase.

Celeste finally whispered.

“I’m sorry.”

Adrian’s face hardened.

“No.”

She flinched.

“No more apologies.”

He stepped closer.

“You don’t get to use two words to make me carry the work of forgiving you.”

Celeste lowered her eyes.

“I know.”

“Do you?”

“Yes.”

Adrian stopped.

“Then help us find my mother.”

Celeste looked up.

“What did Marcus write?”

Brooks showed her the photograph.

BRING THE BRIDE.

Celeste’s face changed.

“He wants me.”

“Why?”

“The card.”

“We have the recordings.”

“No.”

Celeste shook her head.

“Not those.”

Naomi stepped closer.

“What card?”

Celeste looked at her.

“The second card.”

Brooks’s expression darkened.

“You said there was one.”

“I lied.”

Naomi almost laughed.

Celeste continued quickly.

“The ring had two memory cards.”

“Where is the second?”

Celeste hesitated.

“Inside my wedding dress.”

Adrian stared.

“Of course it is.”

Celeste looked ashamed.

“The seam beneath the train.”

“What’s on it?”

“Everything Camille didn’t know.”

“What does that mean?”

Celeste swallowed.

“My meetings with Theodore.”

“Payments.”

“Voss discussing Evelyn’s dosage.”

“Marcus admitting he forged the evidence against Arthur.”

“And?”

Naomi knew there was more.

Celeste looked toward Adrian.

“And Marcus ordering Rachel’s kidnapping.”

Adrian’s jaw tightened.

Brooks asked.

“Where is the dress?”

“In Evelyn’s dressing room.”

Naomi answered.

“No.”

Everyone turned.

“The dress isn’t there.”

Celeste stared.

“What?”

“I moved it yesterday.”

“Why?”

“Because the dry cleaner delivered it and Evelyn said she didn’t want to look at it.”

“Where?”

“Bridal suite.”

Celeste ran upstairs.

Brooks stopped her.

“Slowly.”

They entered the bridal suite.

The garment bag hung exactly where Naomi left it.

Celeste unzipped.

White silk.

Hand embroidery.

A dress that cost more than Naomi’s car.

Celeste lifted the train.

Found the inner seam.

Cut it open with scissors.

Empty.

Her face drained.

“No.”

Naomi looked inside.

Thread had been resewn.

Someone had found it.

Celeste whispered.

“Marcus.”

Brooks frowned.

“How would he know?”

Celeste looked toward the mirror.

“Because I told Adrian.”

Adrian stared.

“You never told me.”

Celeste’s face changed.

“No.”

“She did.”

Everyone turned.

Camille stood in the doorway with two officers.

Brooks had allowed her to assist.

Camille looked at Celeste.

“You told me you told Adrian.”

Celeste shook her head.

“I said I was going to.”

Camille went pale.

Naomi understood.

“Who heard you?”

Camille thought.

Then whispered.

“Voss.”

Celeste closed her eyes.

Voss had told Marcus.

The second card had been stolen before Voss was arrested.

Marcus now possessed the most complete evidence against himself.

And Evelyn.

A hostage.

Why ask for Celeste?

Arthur entered.

“Because the card is encrypted.”

Celeste turned toward her father.

Every time she saw him, the shock remained.

Arthur continued.

“You encrypted the card?”

Celeste nodded.

“Biometric key.”

Brooks frowned.

“Fingerprint?”

“No.”

“Iris?”

Celeste shook her head.

“Voiceprint.”

Naomi stared.

“Whose?”

Celeste answered.

“Mine.”

Marcus needed Celeste alive long enough to unlock it.

Then she would become disposable again.

Brooks asked the next question.

“Where would Marcus take Evelyn?”

Celeste looked at Adrian.

“Somewhere connected to the family.”

“Why?”

“He wants drama.”

Naomi nodded.

Marcus did.

Blue room fire.

Boathouse.

Wedding chapel.

Everything symbolic.

Adrian thought.

“The original Vale Meridian headquarters.”

Arthur looked at him.

“No.”

“Why?”

“Demolished.”

“Not all of it.”

Adrian turned.

“The foundation vault remains under the new tower.”

Naomi frowned.

“What vault?”

“Archive level.”

“Built into the old bank structure.”

Brooks was already calling.

Vale Meridian Tower.

Manhattan.

Ninety minutes away.

Traffic could double it.

Then Naomi remembered something.

“Helipad.”

Adrian looked at her.

“The estate helicopter.”

Raymond shook his head.

“Grounded.”

“Why?”

“Maintenance.”

Naomi closed her eyes.

Someone had thought ahead.

Celeste spoke.

“Marcus has one.”

Everyone turned.

“Private?”

“Chartered.”

“Where?”

“White Plains.”

Brooks called federal aviation authorities.

A helicopter had departed White Plains twenty minutes earlier.

Destination filed as Manhattan.

Naomi looked at Adrian.

“That’s him.”

They moved.

Police arranged helicopter transport from a nearby state facility.

Celeste insisted on coming.

Brooks refused.

Celeste replied.

“He needs my voice.”

“That is precisely why you’re not going.”

“If he can’t unlock the card, he kills Evelyn.”

Brooks stared.

Celeste continued.

“If I’m there, he keeps her alive until I speak.”

Naomi hated that she was right.

Arthur stepped forward.

“I go too.”

“No.”

Celeste turned toward him.

“Dad.”

Arthur looked at her.

“I lost fifteen years.”

“I am not losing you now.”

Celeste’s expression broke.

Naomi interrupted.

“You can both argue on the helicopter.”

Brooks stared at her.

Naomi shrugged.

“We’re wasting time.”

Thirty minutes later, the skyline appeared.

Vale Meridian Tower rose above lower Manhattan.

Glass.

Steel.

Fifty-eight floors.

Beneath it, hidden below street level, remained the old 1978 bank vault that Adrian’s grandfather had used as the company’s first archive.

Marcus knew it.

Arthur knew it.

Evelyn knew it.

The helicopter landed on a nearby secured roof.

Federal agents entered the tower.

Naomi was told to remain behind.

She did not.

Brooks saw her following.

“Why do I bother?”

Naomi answered.

“Habit?”

They descended.

Sub-basement one.

Two.

Three.

At the final security door, the electronic lock had been disabled.

Inside, old concrete corridors stretched beneath modern foundations.

Adrian whispered.

“I haven’t been down here since I was twelve.”

Arthur looked at him.

“Your grandfather kept everything.”

“Contracts.”

“Bribes.”

“Photographs.”

“Secrets.”

They reached the vault.

Door open.

Inside stood Marcus.

Evelyn sat in a chair.

Hands bound.

Alive.

Marcus held a gun.

On the table sat a laptop.

And the second memory card.

Celeste stepped forward.

“Let her go.”

Marcus smiled.

“The bride arrives.”

Adrian moved.

Marcus aimed at Evelyn.

“Stop.”

Everyone stopped.

Marcus looked at Celeste.

“Unlock it.”

“No.”

He pressed the gun closer to Evelyn.

Celeste’s breathing changed.

“Okay.”

She approached the laptop.

Marcus loaded the card.

A voice authentication prompt appeared.

Celeste leaned toward the microphone.

Marcus smiled.

“Say the phrase.”

“What phrase?”

“The one you programmed.”

Celeste looked at him.

“I forgot.”

He laughed.

“No, you didn’t.”

Evelyn looked at Naomi.

Naomi saw something in her expression.

Not fear.

Instruction.

Evelyn’s eyes moved toward the wall.

Old archive boxes.

One labeled 1978 FOUNDATION.

Naomi followed.

Marcus noticed.

“What are you looking at?”

“Nothing.”

He aimed at her.

“I have wanted to shoot you for three days.”

Naomi answered.

“Long weekend.”

Marcus almost smiled.

Celeste stood before the laptop.

Then she spoke.

“The truth survives the people who bury it.”

The system beeped.

Voice accepted.

Files appeared.

Marcus exhaled.

“Finally.”

He reached toward the keyboard.

Celeste stepped aside.

Naomi looked at Evelyn again.

Her eyes remained fixed on the 1978 box.

Naomi understood.

Something else was here.

Something Marcus did not know.

Marcus began deleting files.

Brooks shouted.

“Those are already backed up.”

Marcus froze.

Celeste smiled.

“I uploaded them before the pillow.”

Marcus stared at her.

“What?”

Celeste’s eyes filled with hatred.

“I knew you would betray me.”

Marcus looked at the screen.

Then at her.

“No.”

“The card was never the only copy.”

Marcus’s face twisted.

He raised the gun toward Celeste.

Arthur moved between them.

“No!”

The shot cracked.

Arthur fell.

Celeste screamed.

Everything exploded into motion.

Agents moved.

Marcus ran behind the archive shelves.

Naomi reached Evelyn.

Adrian reached Arthur.

Blood darkened Arthur’s shoulder.

Alive.

Celeste dropped beside him.

“Dad.”

He looked at her.

“Still here.”

Brooks chased Marcus.

Naomi cut Evelyn’s bindings.

“What is in the box?”

Evelyn stared.

“Proof.”

“Of what?”

Evelyn whispered.

“The beginning.”

Naomi pulled the 1978 box down.

Inside were ledgers.

Photographs.

Bank transfer records.

A cassette tape.

And a letter.

Arthur Crane’s name appeared on the envelope.

No.

Not Arthur.

Arthur’s father.

Naomi looked at Evelyn.

“What is this?”

Evelyn’s face went pale.

“The reason Theodore was willing to kill everyone.”

Marcus suddenly reappeared behind them.

Gun raised.

“Put it down.”

Naomi froze.

Marcus smiled.

“You really do notice too much.”

Then Evelyn stood.

Slowly.

She stepped between Marcus and Naomi.

Marcus stared at his aunt.

“Move.”

“No.”

“I will shoot you.”

“You already tried.”

“That was Celeste.”

Evelyn smiled faintly.

“You arranged six weeks of poison.”

Marcus’s face hardened.

Evelyn continued.

“You framed Arthur.”

“You corrupted Voss.”

“You used Celeste.”

“You kidnapped Rachel.”

“You burned everyone around you to protect one secret.”

Marcus shouted.

“Move!”

Evelyn didn’t.

Then Adrian’s voice came from behind Marcus.

“She doesn’t have to.”

Marcus turned.

Adrian hit his gun hand.

The weapon fell.

Brooks tackled Marcus.

Agents swarmed.

He screamed.

Kicked.

Cursed.

Then the handcuffs closed.

For real.

This time no transport route would save him.

Naomi looked at the 1978 box.

The mystery was almost over.

But Evelyn looked terrified of what was inside.

Naomi realized something.

Marcus had not been protecting only his forty-eight-million-dollar theft.

He had been protecting the origin of the Vale fortune.

May you like

And whatever that secret was, Evelyn believed it could destroy the family even now.
