Chapter 11 - Evelyn’s Secret Daughter

Adrian stared at the photograph.

“That isn’t possible.”

Evelyn closed her eyes.

Naomi looked at her.

“Mrs. Vale?”

Adrian turned.

“You know her?”

Evelyn said nothing.

“Mom.”

Her silence answered.

Adrian backed away.

“No.”

Naomi had seen Rachel once.

Not in person.

In a photograph hidden inside Evelyn’s bedside Bible.

A young woman standing beside a lake.

Evelyn had shut the book quickly when Naomi entered.

Naomi had never asked.

Now she understood.

Adrian looked at his mother.

“Who is she?”

Evelyn whispered.

“Rachel.”

“I can see the name.”

His voice broke.

“Who is she?”

Evelyn looked at him.

“Your sister.”

The shoreline seemed to fall silent despite the police radios.

Adrian stared.

“My what?”

“Half-sister.”

“Whose child?”

Evelyn’s eyes filled.

“Your father’s.”

Adrian turned away.

His father, Jonathan Vale, had died twelve years earlier.

Adrian had worshipped him.

Evelyn had rarely spoken of their marriage except with affection.

Now another piece cracked.

“When?”

Adrian asked.

Evelyn swallowed.

“Twenty-three years ago.”

“So Dad had an affair.”

“Yes.”

“And a daughter.”

“Yes.”

“And you knew.”

“Yes.”

Adrian laughed once.

“You all lie.”

Evelyn flinched.

Naomi stepped between them emotionally, not physically.

“Later.”

Adrian looked at her.

Naomi continued.

“Rachel is alive now.”

That brought him back.

Brooks approached.

“Do we know where this photograph was taken?”

Naomi studied it.

Concrete wall.

Metal chair.

Exposed pipes.

One small window.

Adrian looked closer.

“I know that room.”

“Where?”

He enlarged the photograph.

“The old pump house.”

“Estate?”

“No.”

“Our former equestrian property in Bedford.”

Brooks immediately issued orders.

Evelyn grabbed Naomi’s wrist.

“No.”

“What?”

“Celeste won’t be there.”

“How do you know?”

“She knows we’ll recognize it.”

Brooks nodded.

“Probably staged.”

Adrian looked furious.

“Then why send it?”

“To force something.”

Naomi answered.

Celeste called again.

This time Adrian answered.

“Where is she?”

Celeste laughed.

“Hello, darling.”

“Where is Rachel?”

“So your mother finally told you.”

“Where?”

“Does it hurt?”

Adrian closed his eyes.

“What?”

“Finding out your perfect family kept secrets.”

“I don’t care.”

“You will.”

“Celeste.”

His voice became dangerous.

“If you hurt her—”

“What?”

“You’ll stop loving me?”

Silence.

Celeste laughed again.

Naomi watched Adrian’s face.

“You never loved me.”

He said it quietly.

Celeste stopped laughing.

There.

A wound.

Real.

“You don’t get to say that.”

“I just did.”

“You think I wanted any of this?”

“You put a pillow over my mother’s face.”

“She destroyed my family.”

“She protected the man who did.”

“That makes her innocent?”

“No.”

Adrian looked at Evelyn.

His mother lowered her eyes.

“No.”

He repeated.

“But you tried to murder her.”

Celeste’s breathing changed.

Adrian continued.

“And you lied to me every day.”

“You would never have listened to the truth.”

“You never gave me the chance.”

Silence.

Naomi realized something.

Celeste cared what Adrian thought.

Not enough to stop.

But enough to be destabilized.

Naomi took the phone.

“Celeste.”

“Put him back.”

“No.”

“Naomi.”

“Where is Rachel?”

“Why?”

“Because you want something.”

Celeste paused.

Naomi continued.

“If you only wanted her dead, you wouldn’t send a picture.”

“Smart.”

“I know.”

“What do I want?”

“You want Evelyn.”

Evelyn looked at Naomi.

Celeste’s voice softened.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“She knows where my father is.”

Everyone froze.

Naomi looked at Evelyn.

Her face told the truth.

Arthur Crane was alive.

Adrian whispered.

“Oh, my God.”

Celeste heard.

“You see?”

Her voice changed.

“My father didn’t disappear.”

“Evelyn hid him.”

Naomi looked at Evelyn.

“Is that true?”

Evelyn closed her eyes.

Celeste shouted through the phone.

“Ask her!”

Naomi did.

“Mrs. Vale?”

Evelyn whispered.

“Yes.”

Adrian stepped backward.

Celeste laughed bitterly.

“She hid my father for fifteen years.”

“Let my family think he was dead.”

“Let me think he abandoned us.”

“And now she acts like I’m the monster.”

Evelyn spoke loudly enough for the phone.

“I saved his life.”

Celeste went silent.

Naomi held the phone closer.

“From whom?”

Evelyn looked toward Theodore being placed inside a police car.

“Theodore.”

Celeste’s breathing changed.

Evelyn continued.

“Arthur came to me.”

“He had proof Marcus stole the money.”

“He wanted protection.”

“I arranged it.”

“Where?”

Celeste screamed.

“Where is he?”

Evelyn closed her eyes.

“I don’t know.”

“You’re lying.”

“I knew once.”

“You’re lying!”

“He entered federal protection.”

Brooks looked sharply at Evelyn.

“Witness protection?”

Evelyn nodded.

Celeste went silent.

Naomi understood.

Arthur Crane had not simply vanished.

He had become a cooperating witness.

Why had Marcus never been charged?

Evelyn answered before anyone asked.

“The case collapsed.”

“Why?”

“The prosecutor died.”

“Evidence disappeared.”

“Arthur was told he would be killed if he resurfaced.”

Naomi looked at Theodore’s departing vehicle.

His reach had been long.

Celeste whispered.

“You knew he was alive.”

“Yes.”

“And never told me.”

Evelyn’s eyes filled with tears.

“I couldn’t find you.”

“Liar.”

“I tried.”

“You let me grow up believing he abandoned me.”

“I tried.”

“Stop saying that!”

Celeste’s voice cracked.

For the first time, the emotion sounded genuine.

Then it vanished.

“Bring Evelyn to the old chapel tomorrow at ten.”

Brooks shook her head.

Naomi said nothing.

Celeste continued.

“She tells me where my father is.”

“Then Rachel goes free.”

“You know she doesn’t know.”

“Then she tells me everything she does know.”

Naomi lowered her voice.

“And if we refuse?”

Celeste paused.

“You’ll receive another photograph.”

The line disconnected.

Brooks immediately began tracing.

Burner phone.

Moving.

No useful location.

Adrian looked at Evelyn.

“Did Dad know?”

“About Rachel?”

“Yes.”

“Of course.”

“Did he support her?”

“Yes.”

“Did you?”

Evelyn hesitated.

That hurt more.

“Mom.”

“I arranged money.”

“That’s not what I asked.”

Evelyn looked ashamed.

“No.”

“Why?”

“She reminded me of what he did.”

Adrian stared.

“She was a child.”

“I know.”

“Did she know who I was?”

“Yes.”

“Did she know she had a brother?”

“Yes.”

Adrian turned away.

Naomi watched Evelyn.

For the first time since the story began, Naomi was angry with her too.

Evelyn noticed.

“I was not kind.”

“No.”

Naomi’s answer was quiet.

“You weren’t.”

Evelyn’s eyes filled.

Naomi continued.

“But we can deal with your mistakes after we keep Rachel alive.”

Evelyn nodded.

Brooks stepped closer.

“We will not take you to Celeste.”

Evelyn looked at her.

“Yes.”

“No.”

“She wants me.”

“She wants leverage.”

“I am the leverage.”

Naomi understood the older woman.

Guilt had found an opportunity to become courage.

Adrian did too.

“No.”

Evelyn looked at him.

“I abandoned your sister.”

“You didn’t kidnap her.”

“I made choices that left her alone.”

“Mom.”

“I’m going.”

Naomi interrupted.

“We are going.”

Brooks looked furious.

“No one is going anywhere until I have a tactical plan.”

Naomi nodded.

“Then make one.”

Brooks stared.

Naomi continued.

“Celeste expects Evelyn.”

“She expects me.”

“And she doesn’t know exactly what Theodore told us.”

Brooks thought.

Adrian looked toward Naomi.

“You have an idea.”

“Yes.”

“What?”

“Give Celeste the truth.”

Evelyn frowned.

“What truth?”

“All of it.”

Naomi looked at her.

“Arthur.”

“Marcus.”

“Theodore.”

“The trust.”

“Everything.”

“And then?”

Naomi’s expression hardened.

May you like

“See whether she still wants to kill the wrong person.”
