Chapter 4 — After the Sirens

Everything happened fast after that.

Officers stormed through the front door. Caleb tried to run through the kitchen, but he was too late. They forced him to the floor while paramedics rushed to Noah and me.

I remember Noah crying then.

Not loudly.

Just quietly, like he had been holding it inside for too long.

I held his hand as they lifted us onto stretchers.

The woman from the porch stood near the doorway, trembling now that the danger had passed.

Her name was Mara.

She had been Caleb’s affair partner.

But she had not known his real plan until that night. When Caleb called her and said, “It’s done,” she realized he had poisoned us. She sent the message. She called the police. Then she came to the house herself because she was afraid help would arrive too late.

At the hospital, doctors said the dose could have killed us if we had waited longer.

Caleb was arrested before sunrise.

Attempted murder.

Conspiracy.

Evidence tampering.

A dozen charges I couldn’t even process.

Weeks later, Noah asked me if we were safe now.

I looked at my son, alive beside me, wrapped in a hospital blanket with color finally returning to his face.

And I told him the truth.

“We are now.”

Caleb thought he had planned the perfect ending.

But he forgot one thing.

People who love their children do not give up quietly.
