Chapter 3 — The Woman Outside

Caleb didn’t answer immediately.
The doorbell rang again.
Then a woman’s voice called from outside.
“Caleb? Open the door. I know what you did.”
His face changed.
For the first time that night, he looked afraid.
He rushed to the window and pulled the curtain back just enough to see outside.
I opened my eyes slightly.
Standing on the porch was a woman I had never met before. Mid-thirties. Dark coat. Phone in her hand. Calm, but furious.
Caleb unlocked the door and stepped halfway outside.
“What are you doing here?” he hissed.
The woman’s voice was low.
“You said you were leaving her. Not killing her. Not the child.”
My chest tightened.
Noah’s hand found mine.
The woman continued.
“I recorded everything, Caleb. The calls. The plan. The money transfer. All of it.”
Caleb grabbed her arm.
That was his mistake.
Because the second he touched her, red and blue lights flashed across our living room walls.

Police cars surrounded the house.
The woman stepped back and said clearly, “He’s inside. His wife and son are still alive.”
