Chapter 5 - THE BRIDE’S PRESS CONFERENCE

Vanessa appeared before cameras the next morning.

She was still wearing white.

The wedding gown had been replaced by a cream suit.

Her hair was pulled back.

Her face carried the controlled sadness of a woman presenting herself as a victim.

She stood outside the church where the ceremony had been canceled.

“My wedding was destroyed by a calculated act of revenge.”

She claimed I had hidden Adrian’s child to manipulate the Carter trust.

She claimed Adrian was emotionally unstable after learning the truth.

She described herself as a woman trying to protect the company from chaos.

Reporters asked whether she attempted to remove Olivia from the hospital.

Vanessa denied it.

She said Dr. Donnelly acted independently.

Then she made the announcement that shook Carter Holdings.

“I am pregnant.”

Adrian stood inside my hospital room watching the broadcast.

His face became unreadable.

I turned toward him.

“Is it possible?”

He remained silent.

“Adrian.”

“Yes.”

The word hurt even though our marriage was over.

He had continued sleeping with Vanessa after the divorce.

She claimed she was twelve weeks pregnant.

If true, the Carter trust faced two potential heirs.

But Olivia remained the firstborn.

Her voting interest could not be displaced.

Vanessa’s child would receive a smaller financial trust without voting authority.

Unless Olivia was declared illegitimate.

Vanessa’s attorney filed a challenge to the paternity result within an hour.

They claimed the laboratory chain of custody was unreliable.

They demanded a second test.

I agreed under one condition.

The test would be performed in my room, witnessed by independent officers, and processed by two separate accredited laboratories.

Adrian agreed.

Vanessa objected.

That made her position obvious.

The second tests confirmed Adrian was Olivia’s father.

Vanessa’s pregnancy remained unverified.

She refused an independent examination, citing privacy.

Leah studied the documents Vanessa released to reporters.

“The ultrasound image is real.”

“But the patient name has been altered.”

The image belonged to another woman treated at Dr. Donnelly’s clinic.

Vanessa was not pregnant.

She had built a second heir out of stolen medical records.

Adrian watched Leah compare the files.

“How did I not see who she was?”

I answered before I could stop myself.

“You saw what you wanted.”

He nodded.

The board meeting began at noon.

I appeared remotely from the hospital bed.

Olivia slept beside me.

Adrian sat near the wall.

Richard Carter chaired the meeting.

Vanessa attended with her father, Victor Shaw.

Victor looked older than I remembered.

Shaw Urban Group had hidden more than two billion dollars in debt.

The merger was their only path out.

Richard addressed the board.

“This family dispute must not interfere with corporate stability.”

I looked into the camera.

“My daughter is not a family dispute.”

One director asked whether I intended to exercise Olivia’s voting rights.

“Yes.”

“Do you possess the necessary financial qualifications?”

“I served as Carter Holdings’ director of investor strategy for six years.”

“I helped design three of the acquisitions Adrian publicly took credit for.”

Adrian did not object.

Richard’s mouth tightened.

Vanessa’s attorney argued that I had surrendered all corporate claims in the divorce.

Leah displayed the trust acknowledgment.

“Emma surrendered her personal shares.”

“She did not surrender rights belonging to a child who had not yet been born.”

The board reviewed Adrian’s affidavit.

He admitted receiving the pregnancy notice.

He admitted signing without reading.

He admitted Vanessa controlled evidence used during the divorce.

The directors stared at him.

Richard looked furious.

“You have destroyed your credibility.”

Adrian faced his father.

“No.”

“I am describing how I destroyed Emma’s.”

The board voted.

Six directors supported freezing Vanessa’s claim.

Five supported the merger.

Richard cast the deciding vote.

He voted for Vanessa.

Then the trust administrator interrupted.

A new shareholder had requested recognition.

The screen changed.

My mother appeared beside an elderly man.

He introduced himself as Samuel Carter.

Adrian’s grandfather.

The founder everyone had been told was too ill to understand company affairs.

Samuel looked directly into the camera.

“My son no longer speaks for my trust.”

Richard stopped breathing.

May you like

The old man continued.

“And Vanessa Shaw will never control my great-granddaughter.”
