Chapter 10 - THE TRIAL OF THE PERFECT ASSISTANT

Vanessa entered court wearing navy blue.

No diamonds.

No dramatic makeup.

Her attorneys wanted the jury to see a young woman manipulated by powerful men.

The prosecution wanted them to see the architect of a calculated campaign.

Both versions contained truth.

Vanessa had been used by Victor.

She had also used everyone around her.

Adrian testified for two days.

He admitted the affair.

He admitted allowing Vanessa access to my private communications.

He admitted that he presented manipulated evidence during the divorce without verifying it.

Vanessa’s attorney asked whether she forced him to betray his wife.

“No.”

“Did she force you to sleep with her?”

“No.”

“Did she force you to sign the divorce settlement?”

“No.”

“Then why are you blaming her?”

Adrian looked toward the jury.

“I am not.”

“I am describing what she did.”

“I am also describing what I chose.”

The answer removed Vanessa’s easiest defense.

She could not argue Adrian accused her only to protect himself.

He had exposed his own conduct first.

Dr. Donnelly testified about the forged transfer order and the vial.

The hospital employee described installing the camera.

Leah presented the email-server records.

The corporate auditor explained the stolen shares and fake merger fee.

Then I testified.

Vanessa watched me from the defense table.

Her attorney asked why I concealed the pregnancy.

“I did not conceal it from the legal process.”

“I concealed my location and medical details from people who had already used false evidence against me.”

“You wanted maximum leverage after the child’s birth.”

“I wanted a safe delivery.”

“You knew Olivia’s birth would disrupt the wedding.”

“I knew Adrian received formal notice.”

“What he did with information he refused to read was not under my control.”

The attorney displayed a photograph of me holding Olivia during the phone call.

“You answered your ex-husband on his wedding day.”

“He called me.”

“You could have ignored him.”

“Yes.”

“Why didn’t you?”

I thought about the question.

“Because for six months, Adrian and Vanessa controlled the public story.”

“For once, he asked me a direct question.”

“I gave him a direct answer.”

The jury listened to the recorded call.

Today I’m marrying the woman who finally gave me the family you never could.

Then my answer.

I just gave birth.

I’m not going anywhere.

Adrian lowered his eyes.

The cruelty of his words sounded worse inside a courtroom.

Vanessa chose to testify.

She claimed Victor had trained her to protect Shaw Urban Group at any cost.

She described childhood meetings in which her father made her memorize wealthy families’ weaknesses.

She described Adrian as lonely, vain, and easy to flatter.

Then the prosecutor asked about Olivia.

“Why did you attempt to remove her from the hospital?”

“To confirm paternity.”

“Why was the doctor carrying sedatives?”

“I did not know.”

“Why did you hide a drug in Emma’s room before the birth?”

Vanessa looked at me.

“She was taking everything.”

The courtroom became silent.

The prosecutor moved closer.

“Emma’s marriage?”

“Yes.”

“Emma’s shares?”

“Yes.”

“Emma’s child?”

Vanessa’s face twisted.

“That child was going to control my future before she could speak.”

There it was.

Olivia had never been a baby to Vanessa.

She was a vote.

A threat.

A number inside a trust.

The jury convicted Vanessa on every major count.

She received thirty-one years.

Victor received forty-three years after separate proceedings.

At sentencing, Vanessa asked to speak to me.

“I hated you because you could walk away.”

I looked at her.

“I did not walk away.”

“I was pushed out.”

Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.

“But you built something afterward.”

“You could have too.”

She lowered her head.

May you like

The guards led her away.

The woman who once knew every password, schedule, and weakness now lived in a place where every door opened according to someone else’s authority.
