Chapter 18 - Why Brier Needed Him to Leave

Brier finally asked to talk.
Not through her attorney.
Not through Declan.
Directly to me.
We met in a conference room under supervision.
She looked different without cameras.
Smaller.
Tired.
Afraid.
I did not feel sorry for her.
But I wanted answers.
“Why did you call Declan on our wedding night?”
She stared at the table.
“Martin told me to.”
“Why?”
“To trigger the breach.”
I frowned.
“What breach?”
She looked at me.
“Your marital agreement.”
Elena leaned forward.
“What exactly were you told?”
“That if Declan abandoned Sarah immediately after the wedding, Sarah would react.”
“How?”
Brier laughed bitterly.
“The way you did.”
“Activate the trust protections.”
My blood ran cold.
“You wanted me to freeze everything.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because emergency suspension centralized approval.”
I turned toward Elena.
She understood before I did.
“Sarah.”
“What?”
“When you suspended beneficiary authority, temporary transfer power moved to the independent administration channel.”
Brier nodded.
“Martin had administrator credentials.”
Elena stood.
“Oh my God.”
I finally understood.
My reaction had not ruined Martin’s plan.
It had completed it.
“Where is the money?”
Brier swallowed.
“Martin planned to move almost four hundred million during the emergency governance window.”
I stared at her.
“Did he?”
“I don’t know.”
Elena was already calling Graham.
Brier reached for my arm.
Security moved forward.
I pulled away.
“Why are you telling me this now?”
“Because Martin is going to kill me.”
The room went silent.
She reached inside her purse slowly.
Security stopped her.
“It’s a flash drive.”
They removed it.
Brier nodded toward me.
“I copied everything.”
“What everything?”
“Payments.”
“Messages.”
“Recordings.”
Then she looked toward Declan, who had been watching through the glass wall.
“And proof that he never intended to leave you that night.”
I stared at her.
“What?”
“Declan told me no.”
She looked ashamed.
“I threatened to send you the messages from eight months ago.”
My heart tightened.
“He still said no.”
Declan closed his eyes behind the glass.
Brier continued.
“Then Martin told him I had taken pills.”
Declan had believed she was in danger.
That was why he left.
Not because he wanted Brier.
But that truth did not erase everything else.
He had still lied.
Still hidden their messages.
Still allowed me to marry him without knowing why his family needed me.
Brier whispered.
“He came because he thought he was saving me.”
I looked at Declan.
For the first time since our wedding, I believed that part.
Then Elena returned to the room.
Her face was pale.
“Martin accessed the emergency administration account.”
My stomach dropped.
“How much did he take?”
“Nothing.”
I exhaled.
Elena shook her head.
“That isn’t why I’m worried.”
“What is it?”
“He tried.”
“And the system blocked him because someone changed the authorization code twelve minutes before the wedding.”
I looked through the glass.
Declan was staring at us.
May you like
Elena continued.
“The person who changed it was Declan.”
