Chapter 15 - The Quiet Whitmore

Charles had always seemed harmless.

He spoke softly.

Avoided arguments.

Let Celeste dominate every room.

I had spent three years believing he was simply tired of his wife’s ambition.

I was wrong.

Celeste stood slowly.

“Go upstairs.”

Charles laughed.

“You still think you can give orders.”

Declan stepped between them.

“Dad, what is happening?”

Charles looked at his son.

“What always happens when people become obsessed with the wrong villain.”

He pointed toward Celeste.

“Your mother makes noise.”

Then toward himself.

“I make decisions.”

My stomach tightened.

I opened the ledger.

“Were the transfers yours?”

“Some.”

“Brier?”

He smiled faintly.

“Mostly mine.”

Celeste looked genuinely furious.

“You used her accounts?”

“You introduced her to the family.”

“You said the money was protected.”

“It was until Sarah decided to become curious.”

I felt Declan stiffen beside me.

“What about Elizabeth Hale?” I asked.

Charles’s smile disappeared.

The room became silent.

“My mother found you moving money.”

“She found irregularities.”

“She copied the evidence.”

“She was persistent.”

I stepped toward him.

“What happened the night she died?”

Elena touched my arm.

A reminder not to accuse without evidence.

Charles knew it too.

He smiled again.

“Your mother drove too fast in the rain.”

My whole body went cold.

Celeste whispered, “Charles.”

He looked at her.

“What?”

“You told me that problem was handled legally.”

Declan stared between his parents.

“What problem?”

Charles’s expression shifted.

He had said too much.

I saw it.

So did Elena.

She quietly activated the recorder on her phone.

I stepped closer.

“What did you do?”

Charles smiled.

“Nothing you can prove.”

Then he walked toward the front door.

Two security officers blocked him.

Elena spoke.

“Mr. Whitmore, the independent trustee has issued preservation instructions.”

“You don’t have authority to detain me.”

“No.”

She stepped aside.

“But the investigators waiting outside may have questions.”

For the first time, Charles looked concerned.

Red and blue lights reflected faintly through the townhouse windows.

Someone had contacted authorities regarding the forged document and offshore transfers.

Charles looked at Celeste.

“You called them?”

She shook her head.

Then we all heard another voice.

“I did.”

Everett Whitmore stood in the doorway behind us.

His nurse held his arm.

He looked fragile.

But his eyes were sharp.

Charles stared at his father.

Everett lifted one shaking hand.

“You have stolen from this family for fifteen years.”

May you like

Then he looked at me.

“And Elizabeth died trying to prove it.”
