Chapter 20 - THE BED SHE FINALLY LEFT

One year later, Valeria stood before a painting in a quiet restoration studio in Coyoacán.

Sunlight fell across the canvas.

Mateo played nearby with wooden blocks.

Alejandro sat on the floor beside him.

He no longer ran the Aranda empire.

Parts of the company had been sold.

Other divisions survived under new independent management.

Alejandro kept a smaller development firm.

No family foundation.

No hidden accounts.

No portraits of powerful ancestors watching from marble walls.

Just work.

At the studio entrance hung a small brass plaque.

MENDOZA CONSERVATION WORKSHOP.

Valeria had reopened her father's profession under his name.

Her first major project was the landscape painting from Rafael's study.

The one that had hidden his letter.

She restored every damaged section.

But she left one mark untouched.

A small cut in the back of the frame.

Alejandro asked why.

"Because restoration isn't pretending something was never damaged."

She said.

"It's preserving the truth without letting the damage destroy the whole piece."

He looked at her for a long moment.

"Are you talking about the painting?"

Valeria smiled.

"Maybe."

That evening, they drove past Las Lomas.

Not intentionally.

Traffic redirected them.

For a few seconds, the old mansion appeared beyond the trees.

It belonged to another family now.

The windows glowed.

Children played in the garden.

Valeria became quiet.

Alejandro noticed.

"Do you want me to turn around?"

"No."

She looked at the mansion.

"I used to think that bed was the only place where they couldn't reach me."

Alejandro said nothing.

"For three days, I was terrified to put my feet on the floor."

"I thought if I opened that door, your mother would finish what she started."

She looked toward Mateo asleep in the back seat.

"And I thought if I told you the truth, you would choose them."

Alejandro swallowed.

"I almost did."

"Yes."

She answered.

There was no cruelty in her voice.

Only truth.

He reached across the console.

Valeria took his hand.

Not because the past had disappeared.

Because it no longer controlled the present.

At home, Mateo woke crying.

Alejandro carried him upstairs.

Valeria changed into pajamas.

Then she climbed into bed.

For a moment, she remembered that morning.

The blanket.

Alejandro's rage.

The terror.

The bruises she had hidden because she thought no one would believe her.

She looked at the man beside her now.

Different.

Not perfect.

Different.

Alejandro turned off the lamp.

Then his phone buzzed.

He ignored it.

Valeria smiled.

"You're not going to check?"

"No."

"What if it's important?"

He looked at her.

"You are important."

She laughed softly.

Outside, Mexico City stretched beneath the night sky.

No guards waited in marble corridors.

No family whispers moved behind closed doors.

No one controlled which calls reached Alejandro.

No one decided whether Valeria's voice deserved to be heard.

Mateo slept safely down the hall.

Alejandro closed his eyes.

Valeria rested one hand over the place where she had once carried him.

Then she heard her phone vibrate.

A new email had arrived.

The sender was unknown.

No subject.

Only one attachment.

Valeria opened it.

It was a scanned page from Javier Mendoza's missing notebook.

A page she had never seen.

At the bottom, her father had written one final sentence.

Rafael is not the only Aranda trying to help me.

Valeria sat upright.

Alejandro opened his eyes.

"What is it?"

She turned the screen toward him.

He read the sentence.

His expression changed.

Because Rafael had only one brother.

A man the family had not spoken about in twenty-five years.

A man everyone believed had died before Alejandro was born.

Valeria looked at her husband.

May you like

The past they thought they had finally buried had just opened another door.
