Chapter 14 - THE BOX JAVIER LEFT
Valeria's mother, Lucía, had never spoken much about Javier's death.
She said grief was a room she had locked years ago.
Now Valeria went to her childhood home in Coyoacán.
Alejandro went with her.
Lucía opened the door.
She saw the old photographs.
Her face collapsed.
"You found them."
Valeria stared.
"You knew?"
Lucía sat slowly.
"Your father told me if anything happened, I should destroy everything."
"Did you?"
"No."
"Why?"
"Because I couldn't."
Lucía went to the bedroom.
She returned with a wooden artist's case.
Inside were brushes.
Old restoration tools.
Receipts.
And a sealed notebook.
Javier's handwriting filled the pages.
He had discovered fake art purchases tied to the foundation.
He believed Serrano helped launder payments through medical charities.
He believed Esther controlled the operation.
But there was another name.
Rafael Aranda.
Valeria looked at Alejandro.
His father had been more involved than either wanted to admit.
Javier wrote that Rafael initially threatened him.
Then something changed.
Rafael returned weeks later.
He confessed.
He wanted help collecting evidence.
The two men began working together.
Enemies became reluctant allies.
Then Javier made a final entry.
Esther knows.
If something happens to me, Rafael must finish this.
Two days later, Javier was killed.
Alejandro closed the notebook.
"My father failed yours."
Lucía shook her head.
"No."
"Your father was afraid."
"Mine was stubborn."
"Both men made mistakes."
"Both tried too late."
She looked at Valeria.
"You two do not have to repeat them."
Valeria began crying.
Lucía placed one hand over her daughter's belly.
"This child does not need the Aranda empire."
"He needs parents who choose truth before pride."
Alejandro lowered his eyes.
Those words followed him for days.
Then came the forensic report on the vial recovered from Valeria's room.
The substance was identified.
It could have caused severe complications in pregnancy.
And fingerprints were recovered from the glass.
Dr. Serrano's.
One partial print belonged to Marcela.
And one clear print belonged to Doña Esther Aranda.
