Chapter 1: The Bloodline Token

The ballroom fell dead silent, the echo of the shattering porcelain cake stand still vibrating in the air. Victoria Sterling, the matriarch of the Sterling empire, pushed past the mocking guests, her eyes locked entirely on Maya’s wrist. She ignored the ruined $10,000 cake, ignored her own spoiled granddaughter, Chloe, who was still wearing a smug, triumphant grin.
Victoria grabbed Maya’s trembling arm. "Where did you get this?" she demanded, her voice cracking with an emotion no one in high society had ever heard from her. "The silver coin. The Roman crest. Answer me!"
Maya flinched, trying to pull away, her uniform soaked in frosting. "My... my mother gave it to me," she stammered, tears cutting tracks through the cake smudge on her cheek. "She said it was all she had left from before the orphanage."
Chloe laughed, stepping forward. "Grandma, don't touch her! She’s just a clumsy charity case looking for attention. I tripped her because she didn't know her place."
Victoria turned slowly, her gaze freezing Chloe in her tracks. "Be quiet, Chloe." Victoria turned back to Maya, her hands shaking as she touched the antique silver medallion. It wasn't a cheap replica. It was the signet coin of the Sterling family lineage—the one given to Victoria's long-lost daughter, Eleanor, who vanished twenty-four years ago.

"Your mother," Victoria whispered, a tear escaping her sharp eyes. "What was her name?"
"Eleanor," Maya said softly. "Eleanor Vance."
