Chapter 8 - JULIAN’S REAL BEGINNING

They escaped through the service staircase while firefighters entered the hotel.
The blaze remained confined to the twenty-second floor.
No guests were injured.
The intruder disappeared during the evacuation.
Clara carried Miriam’s letter inside her coat.
They read it inside Julian’s car.
Evelyn’s hands shook too badly to hold the paper.
Clara read aloud.
Twenty-six years ago, a two-year-old boy was brought to the same clinic where Rose had been abandoned.
His mother had died from an untreated infection.
The boy carried no identification.
Warren Cole arrived before child services.
He arranged for the child to be transferred into a private adoption.
That boy became Julian Ashford.
Julian stared through the windshield.
“My adoption file says I was born in Boston.”
“The file was fabricated,” Clara said.
Evelyn shook her head.
“Helena introduced me to the adoption agency.”
“She said she had heard about a child who needed a home.”
Miriam’s letter explained that Victor had witnessed Warren carrying the child into the clinic.
Years later, he learned the identity of Julian’s biological mother.
Her name was Anna Mercer.
She had worked as Richard Ashford’s private secretary.
Evelyn looked toward Julian.
He became completely still.
“Was Richard my father?” he asked.
Clara continued reading.
According to Miriam, Anna had repeatedly denied that Richard fathered her child.
She claimed Julian’s father was another Ashford employee.
A man Helena had sent away shortly before Julian’s birth.
That man was Victor Shaw.
Julian leaned back as though someone had struck him.
“Victor?”
Evelyn covered her mouth.
Miriam’s letter described how Helena discovered Anna’s relationship with Victor.
She needed Victor to participate in Rose’s kidnapping.
She threatened to expose his affair and destroy Anna’s reputation.
After the kidnapping, Helena forced Victor to disappear.
Anna became desperate.
When she threatened to tell Evelyn everything, Warren arranged for her to be denied treatment at a private hospital controlled by the Ashford Foundation.
She died within days.
Helena then placed Julian in Evelyn’s path.
Not as an act of kindness.
As insurance.
A grieving Evelyn would become attached to the child.
Victor would remain silent to protect his son.
And Helena would maintain influence over the Ashford heir.
Julian read the final lines himself.
You were never chosen to replace Rose.
You were chosen to control Victor.
Evelyn looked at Julian.
“I did not know.”
“I know.”
“I loved you.”
“I know that too.”
His voice remained steady, but Clara saw the pain behind it.
For twenty-six years, Julian had believed he was the fortunate orphan adopted into a powerful family.
Now he knew his tragedy had been designed by the same people who arranged Clara’s disappearance.
Clara reached for his hand.
“Our lives were connected before we ever met.”
Julian looked at her.
“Connected by Helena.”
“No.”
Clara tightened her grip.
“Connected by the people who refused to let Helena win.”
A message arrived on Julian’s phone.
It came from Miriam’s number.
A photograph appeared first.
Miriam sat in a wooden chair inside a dark room.
Warren Cole stood behind her.
