Chapter 6 - THE CHAUFFEUR AT BLACKWATER LAKE

The voice on the tape belonged to Victor Shaw.

He described the kidnapping in broken sentences interrupted by static.

Helena had approached him one month before Rose disappeared.

She told him Richard wanted to teach Evelyn a lesson after a vicious argument over control of the company.

Victor’s role was supposed to be simple.

He would remove the baby from the nursery.

He would take her to the roadside inn.

Richard would frighten Evelyn for several hours and then arrange for the child to be “found.”

But when Victor arrived at the inn, Helena was waiting without Richard.

She gave him a forged police badge, cash, and new instructions.

Drive north.

Leave the child where no Ashford would ever find her.

Victor refused.

Helena threatened his wife and young son.

He drove away with Rose but could not abandon her in the forest as ordered.

Instead, he left her at Saint Catherine’s Clinic.

Then he disappeared.

The recording ended with Victor naming Blackwater Lake.

Clara unfolded the photograph found at Miriam’s house.

The cabin behind Miriam stood beside dark water surrounded by pine trees.

Blackwater Lake was three hours away.

Julian wanted Clara to remain at the estate.

She refused.

“Miriam spent twenty-eight years protecting me.”

“I am not hiding while she is missing.”

Evelyn joined them.

“Neither am I.”

Julian looked at his mother.

“You are staying here.”

“I lost my daughter once because other people made decisions for me.”

Evelyn’s voice did not rise.

“I will not make that mistake again.”

They drove north with two security vehicles behind them.

Rain began falling before they reached the mountains.

The road narrowed.

Cell service disappeared.

At the end of an unmarked dirt trail, they found the cabin.

The front door stood open.

Inside, a fire still burned in the stone fireplace.

Three cups rested on the table.

One contained fresh coffee.

Another had been knocked onto the floor.

Clara called Miriam’s name.

No answer came.

Julian searched the bedrooms.

Evelyn discovered a trapdoor beneath a rug.

The steps led into a storm cellar.

Victor Shaw sat against the wall with his hands tied.

He was older, thinner, and heavily scarred along one side of his face.

He looked at Evelyn and began to cry.

“I am sorry,” he whispered.

“Where is Miriam?” Clara asked.

“Helena took her.”

“Where?”

“I don’t know.”

Victor explained that Miriam had found him six years earlier after tracing the clinic officer’s name.

He confessed everything to her.

Miriam wanted to tell Clara immediately.

Victor convinced her to wait until they possessed enough evidence to survive Helena’s retaliation.

For years, they searched for the original kidnapping records.

Three months earlier, they discovered that Warren Cole kept private files in an abandoned Ashford textile mill.

“Why didn’t you go to the police?” Julian asked.

“Warren had judges, officers, and city officials on the family payroll.”

Victor looked at Evelyn.

“Your husband helped him build that network.”

Evelyn’s face remained expressionless.

“Did Richard order my daughter’s kidnapping?”

“No.”

“He agreed to a staged disappearance.”

“He wanted to frighten you into surrendering control of the company.”

“But he never agreed to lose Rose.”

Clara felt no relief.

A father willing to use his baby as a weapon was still guilty.

Victor shifted painfully.

“Helena took Miriam because she believes Miriam has the ledger.”

“What ledger?”

“The record of every payment Warren made after the kidnapping.”

“Where is it?” Clara asked.

Victor looked toward the fireplace.

“Miriam hid it inside the one place Helena would never willingly search.”

“Where?”

May you like

Victor met Clara’s eyes.

“Your wedding dress.”
