Chapter 4 – The House That Finally Became a Home

Over the next year, the Hayes estate changed.

Unused guest rooms became classrooms.

The enormous ballroom became a community center every Saturday.

Families struggling with childcare were invited to free educational programs.

No employee ever had to hide their children again.

A new rule was engraved near the staff entrance.

Every child who enters this house will be treated with dignity.

Sophia proudly read it every morning.

Daniel became the person she always ran to after preschool.

She insisted on showing him every drawing.

Every loose tooth.

Every new word she learned.

One evening she asked,

"Mr. Daniel?"

"Yes?"

"Why are you always nice to me?"

Daniel smiled sadly.

"Because someone should have been."

Sophia hugged him.

"You can be my family."

May you like

For the first time in years...

Daniel cried.
