Chapter 3 – A Promise Worth More Than Money

Life slowly became peaceful again.
Sophia no longer whispered when she was hungry.
She laughed.
She ran through the gardens.
She called the elderly gardener "Grandpa Ben."
Maria still expected to lose her job.
Instead, Daniel invited her into his office.
"I owe you an apology."
"You've done nothing wrong."
"I failed to see what was happening inside my own home."
Maria lowered her eyes.
"You trusted the wrong person."
"So did you."
He slid a folder across the desk.
Inside was a contract.
Not for housekeeping.
For Director of the Hayes Children's Foundation.
Maria stared at him.
"I've never managed a foundation."
"No."
"You've managed something much harder."
She looked confused.
"You've kept a child kind in a world that hasn't always been kind to her."
May you like
Tears filled Maria's eyes.
She accepted.
