Chapter 3 – The Name She Buried

Victoria snatched the document.

Her confidence returned instantly.

"This has to be fake."

She opened it.

Her smile faded.

Every signature...

Every seal...

Every notarized page...

Authentic.

The ballroom watched her hands begin to shake.

"No..."

"This isn't possible."

The waitress finally spoke the name she had hidden all evening.

"My name..."

"...is Eleanor Ashford."

The surname struck the room like lightning.

Several elderly guests instinctively stood.

One woman covered her mouth.

Another whispered a prayer.

The Ashfords had once ruled industries, banks, charities, and governments.

Then...

Almost overnight...

They vanished.

Officially, the family line had ended.

Unofficially...

Rumors claimed someone survived.

Victoria slowly backed away.

"You died."

"So everyone believed."

Eleanor nodded.

"My grandfather wanted it that way."

She gently rotated the pink diamond.

"This ring wasn't an inheritance."

"It was proof."

Charles Whitmore stepped beside her.

"For twenty-four years..."

"...she has been waiting."

Victoria stared between them.

"Waiting for what?"

Eleanor looked around the ballroom.

Every guest suddenly felt as though she were looking directly into their soul.

"The people who stole my family's empire..."

"...to gather in one room."

Nobody breathed.

Nobody moved.

Outside...

Thunder rolled across the night sky.

Then every chandelier inside the ballroom flickered.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

The lights suddenly went out.

Complete darkness swallowed the room.

A woman screamed.

Glass shattered somewhere near the stage.

Then...

A man's terrified voice echoed through the darkness.

May you like

"The diamond..."

"It's gone."
