Chapter 7 – The Man Behind the Locked Door

Charles did not deny it.

That frightened Eleanor more than any confession.

Victoria stared at the old banker.

“You killed our grandfather?”

Charles looked toward Henry Ashford’s portrait.

“I helped create the circumstances that led to his death.”

Richard laughed softly.

“What an elegant way to describe murder.”

Charles tightened his grip on his cane.

“Henry called an emergency board meeting after discovering that Richard had created false subsidiaries to drain the company.”

Richard’s pleasant expression vanished.

“He planned to expose every person involved,” Charles continued. “Politicians. Bankers. Judges. He had evidence stored on this floor.”

“So you stopped him,” Eleanor said.

“We were told the building would be evacuated after the records were removed. Richard promised no one would be harmed.”

“I promised no such thing,” Richard replied.

Charles’s eyes filled with shame.

“A fire started in the archival room. Henry was trapped behind the boardroom doors.”

“And you held them closed,” Eleanor said.

Charles nodded.

“I heard him pounding.”

The room became painfully silent.

“I told myself that opening the doors would destroy hundreds of lives. Companies would collapse. Employees would lose everything. Governments would investigate. Markets would panic.”

“You protected criminals,” Victoria said.

“I protected myself.”

Richard approached the table.

“At least he finally understands honesty.”

He placed the pink diamond ring in the center.

Eleanor did not reach for it.

“What do you want?”

“The same thing I have always wanted. Control of the Ashford assets.”

“You already controlled them.”

“Parts of them. Henry designed the trust so that full ownership could only transfer when both surviving heirs were identified.”

Richard looked at Victoria.

“That is why I raised you.”

Victoria’s face hardened.

“You made me cruel.”

“I made you useful.”

He pulled a document from inside his jacket.

“The trust activates tonight. Both heirs are present. Both are adults. Both can sign.”

Eleanor glanced at the armed guards.

“And if we refuse?”

Richard looked at Charles.

“A public confession from him will destroy the board. The financial institutions connected to the Ashford trust will freeze every account. Thousands of employees will face uncertainty.”

“You are using innocent workers as shields.”

“That is how empires survive.”

Victoria stepped toward him.

“You lied to me my entire life.”

Richard touched her cheek.

“I gave you a better life than Margaret ever could.”

Victoria slapped his hand away.

He sighed.

“You were always emotional. Fortunately, I prepared for that weakness.”

One guard dragged the hotel manager into the room.

His hands had been tied.

The second guard displayed a phone showing a live video feed from the ballroom.

Guests were trapped inside.

Security shutters covered the exits.

Richard placed a silver remote on the table.

“One button releases the doors.”

His thumb moved toward another button.

“The second seals the ventilation system.”

Eleanor looked at the frightened manager.

“You would harm a room full of powerful witnesses?”

“I would never need to.”

Richard slid the documents toward the sisters.

“Because both of you are going to sign.”

Victoria picked up the pen.

Eleanor stared at her.

Victoria slowly lowered the tip toward the paper.

Then she drove the pen through Richard’s hand.

May you like

His scream tore through the room.

“Now,” Victoria said, “I understand why uniforms reveal character.”
