Chapter 1 – The Ring Everyone Recognized

Nobody helped Victoria stand.

Not immediately.

Every eye had locked onto the ring.

The pink diamond wasn't simply expensive.

It was legendary.

Stories about it had circulated among the wealthiest families for decades.

The Ashford Rose.

The rarest pink diamond ever privately owned.

Officially, it had disappeared nearly twenty-five years earlier after the mysterious death of billionaire industrialist Henry Ashford.

Insurance investigators never recovered it.

Neither did the police.

Yet tonight...

It rested quietly on the finger of an anonymous waitress.

Victoria's confidence cracked.

"Where..." she whispered.

"...did you steal that?"

The waitress smiled.

It wasn't friendly.

It wasn't mocking.

It looked almost disappointed.

"I've been asked that question many times."

She knelt beside Victoria.

"So let me answer it one last time."

"I didn't steal it."

"It was given to me."

The ballroom erupted into whispers.

Impossible.

Absurd.

Who would give a waitress a diamond worth hundreds of millions?

Victoria laughed.

"You expect anyone to believe that?"

"No."

"I expect them to remember."

Across the ballroom...

An elderly man slowly stood.

Eighty-two-year-old Charles Whitmore.

Founder of Whitmore National Bank.

One of the richest men in attendance.

His trembling hands tightened around his cane.

"I know that ring."

Every conversation stopped.

Charles slowly walked toward the waitress.

The closer he came...

The paler his face became.

Finally, standing only a few feet away, he lowered his head.

Not to inspect the diamond.

To show respect.

"My Lady..."

The ballroom gasped.

Victoria stared in disbelief.

"What did you just call her?"

Charles looked directly into Victoria's eyes.

May you like

"The only living heir..."

"...to the Ashford legacy."
