Chapter 2: The Test No One Knew They Were Taking

Earlier that morning...
Eleanor had arrived wearing simple shoes, an inexpensive gray dress, and no makeup beyond a touch of lipstick.
Only the hotel's executive manager knew who she really was.
Everyone else believed she was simply an elderly relative from the bride's side.
Throughout the day she watched.
A young waiter quietly brought her fresh tea without being asked.
She thanked him.
A housekeeper offered her a chair when she noticed Eleanor rubbing her knee.
She thanked her too.
Then came the woman in silver.
Patricia Langford.
Mother of the groom.
She glanced at Eleanor's modest clothes once.
That was enough.
From then on the insults became sharper.
"This reception isn't for charity cases."
"You should eat somewhere else."
"You'll embarrass our family."
Each word was carefully captured by hidden security cameras.
Even worse, several guests laughed along.
Only one person stood between Eleanor and the humiliation.
The bride.
Emily never asked whether Eleanor was rich.
She simply smiled.
She shared her chair.
Wrapped Eleanor's shoulders with her own shawl when the ballroom grew cold.
And whispered,
"Everyone deserves kindness."
That single sentence brought tears to Eleanor's eyes.

The test had ended long before Patricia ordered Eleanor to leave.
Emily had already passed.
