CHAPTER 4 — The Exit

Morning came without sleep.
No one in the Bennett house had closed their eyes.
Olivia stood in the bedroom packing a small bag.
Only essentials.
Margaret watched from the doorway.
“You’re making a mistake,” she said.
Olivia didn’t look up.
“No. I’m correcting one.”
Jason stood behind Margaret, silent.
He had been silent for too long.
Finally, he spoke.
“I can fix this.”
Olivia zipped her bag.
“You already chose what matters most.”
She turned toward him.
“It just wasn’t me.”
A long pause.
Jason stepped forward slightly—but stopped.
Because there was nothing left to reach for.
Olivia walked past them both.
Down the stairs.
Out of the house.
No tears.
Only clarity.
And behind her, the baby monitor on the nursery dresser blinked one last time before going dark.
