CHAPTER 2 — The Upstairs Truth

Jason rushed upstairs first.

Olivia followed slower, one hand steadying her stomach as she climbed each step.

Margaret stayed behind—but her silence followed them like a shadow.

The nursery door was slightly open.

The baby monitor sat on the dresser, blinking red.

Jason grabbed it.

“Someone hacked it,” he said quickly. “That’s the only explanation.”

Olivia looked at him.

“You think I didn’t recognize your voice?”

A pause.

Jason’s jaw tightened.

Then softly:

“You weren’t supposed to hear that.”

That sentence confirmed everything.

Olivia didn’t scream.

She didn’t collapse.

She just nodded slowly, like something finally made sense.

“I see.”

From downstairs, Margaret’s voice called up coldly:

“This family will not be destroyed by your imagination.”

Olivia turned slightly toward the stairs.

“It already is.”

Jason stepped closer.

“Olivia, please—let me explain.”

But she took one step back.

“No.”

Just one word.

Enough to end everything.
