Chapter 10 – The Hidden House
Using clues from Clara's letters, Adrian and Samuel drove several hours into the countryside.
At the end of a narrow dirt road stood a weathered white cottage.
"This is where Clara lived," Samuel said quietly.
Inside, time seemed frozen.
A child's drawings still hung on the refrigerator.
Books remained stacked beside an old rocking chair.
Fresh flowers had long since dried inside a glass vase.
Lily walked slowly into the bedroom.
"My mommy slept here."
She climbed onto the bed and hugged the faded quilt.
Adrian noticed a loose floorboard beneath the rocking chair.
He carefully lifted it.
Hidden underneath was a small wooden box.
Inside lay photographs, Clara's wedding ring...
...and dozens of journals.
Samuel opened the first notebook.
Every page documented names, dates, bank accounts, conversations, and evidence.
Clara had spent seven years preparing for the day the truth would finally emerge.
Near the bottom of the box rested one final envelope.
Across the front were the words:
"Open only when my children are together."
Adrian looked at Lily.
She nodded.
Together, brother and sister broke the seal.
