Chapter 1 – The Crest That Changed Everything

The ballroom, only moments earlier alive with laughter and champagne toasts, had fallen into complete silence.

Every pair of eyes remained fixed on the small silver crest resting in Adrian Lancaster's trembling hand.

His breathing became uneven.

The lion engraved in the center wasn't merely a family emblem. It was handcrafted by his grandfather over forty years ago. Only three identical crests had ever existed.

One belonged to Adrian's grandfather.

One had been buried with his grandmother.

The third had disappeared with his mother.

It was impossible for anyone outside the Lancaster family to possess it.

Adrian slowly lifted his eyes toward the little girl.

She couldn't have been older than six. Her white dress had been washed so many times that the fabric had begun to fade. Brown curls framed her tear-streaked face, and despite the fear filling her wide green eyes, she refused to step backward.

"Where did you get this?" Adrian asked softly.

The girl swallowed.

"My mommy gave it to me."

The words struck him harder than any physical blow.

"What was your mother's name?"

She hesitated before answering.

"Clara."

The room seemed to tilt beneath Adrian's feet.

Bianca laughed nervously.

"There are thousands of women named Clara."

No one joined her laughter.

Instead, everyone watched Adrian's expression drain of color.

The little girl carefully reached into the pocket of her tiny dress and removed a folded envelope, worn from years of being carried.

"My mommy said... if I ever found a man named Adrian Lancaster..."

Her voice cracked.

"...I should give him this."

With shaking fingers, Adrian accepted the envelope.

Across the front, written in elegant handwriting he recognized instantly, were five simple words.

For My Son, Adrian.

His knees nearly gave out.

Only one person had ever written his name exactly that way.

His mother.
