Chapter 1: The Name She Never Stopped Whispering

The alley disappeared around Evelyn Carter.
She no longer saw the damp brick walls, the overflowing dumpsters, or the expensive shopping bags dangling from her wrist. All she could see were the boy's eyes.
Blue.
The exact shade as the infant she had kissed goodbye eight years earlier.
Her knees struck the cold pavement before she even realized she had fallen.
"Mom?"
The little word escaped the boy's lips again, uncertain this time, as though he was testing a dream he feared would disappear.
Evelyn's fingers trembled.
"No..."
Her voice cracked.
"No... that's impossible."
The little girl beside her looked back and forth between them.
"Mom... do you know him?"
Evelyn couldn't answer.
She reached toward the boy's face but stopped inches away, terrified that touching him would make the illusion vanish.
"What... what's your name?"
The boy swallowed.
"Daniel."
The world tilted.
That had been the name.
The name she had whispered into her newborn son's ear before the hospital told her he had died during an emergency transfer.
She remembered collapsing from blood loss.
She remembered signing papers she had never fully understood.
She remembered a closed casket.
No one had allowed her to see her baby one last time.
Eight years.
Eight years of birthdays spent standing beside an empty grave.
Eight years of wondering whether she could have done something differently.
Now the impossible was staring back at her.
"You..." she whispered.
"Who takes care of you?"
Daniel lowered his eyes.
"I stay wherever people don't chase me away."
Silence settled over the alley.
Even the traffic beyond the street seemed to disappear.
Emily tugged gently on her mother's sleeve.
"Can he come home with us?"
Evelyn looked at her daughter.
Then back at Daniel.

For the first time in years, her heart wasn't grieving the past.
It was racing toward the truth.
