Chapter 7: The Hearing
The family court hearing took place behind closed doors.
Evelyn entered wearing a dark blue dress and no handcuffs.
Her attorneys argued that the nursery footage lacked context.
They claimed Evelyn had taken the inhaler because Maya was administering medication incorrectly.
They described the physical confrontation as an attempt to protect Oliver.
Then they presented a new witness.
Rosa Delgado, Oliver’s nanny.
Ryan looked at Rosa in disbelief.
The night before, she had denied Evelyn’s accusations.
Now she sat behind Evelyn’s legal team with her hands folded tightly in her lap.
Under oath, Rosa said Maya often appeared exhausted and anxious.
She admitted Maya had once shouted during an argument with Ryan.
Then Evelyn’s attorney asked whether Rosa believed Maya was emotionally stable.
Rosa looked toward Maya.
Her eyes were filled with fear.
“I don’t know,” she whispered.
It was not the answer Evelyn wanted, but it was enough to create doubt.
During a recess, Ryan found Rosa crying in the restroom hallway.
“She threatened your family,” he said.
Rosa shook her head.
“I cannot talk.”
“Rosa, my son nearly died.”
“She knows where my daughter lives.”
Ryan’s anger disappeared.
“What did she say?”
Rosa glanced toward a security camera.
“She said immigration officers would receive information about my sister. She said my daughter’s scholarship would disappear.”
Ryan understood.
Evelyn did not earn loyalty.
She collected fear.
“Tell Detective Ortiz,” he said. “I will protect your family.”
“You cannot even protect your own company.”
The words were cruel, but they were true.
Back inside the courtroom, Evelyn’s attorneys introduced the forged medical assessment.
Dr. Hale was too injured to testify in person.
The judge hesitated.
Maya gripped Ryan’s hand.
Then Detective Ortiz entered with a court order authenticating the original nursery footage.
Daniel’s voice had been identified.
The financial account in Oliver’s name was now part of a criminal investigation.
The judge denied Evelyn’s guardianship petition.
But before dismissing the case, she warned Ryan and Maya that child services would continue evaluating Oliver’s home environment.
Evelyn smiled as she left.
She had lost the hearing.
Yet she did not look defeated.
Outside the courthouse, Detective Ortiz approached Ryan.
“We found Daniel’s car at the airport.”
“Did he leave the country?”
“We don’t think so. His passport was inside.”
“Then where is he?”
Ortiz handed Ryan a photograph recovered from the glove compartment.
It showed Daniel standing beside Evelyn and Ryan’s father.
The photograph had been taken fifteen years earlier.
