Chapter 6: The Woman in the Recording
Claire arrived at the hospital carrying a laptop and a portable drive.
She locked the door before opening the files.
“I found the camera archive,” she said. “Someone tried to erase it.”
“Did they succeed?” Maya asked.
“Partially.”
Several weeks of footage were missing.
But the recording from the day of the nursery incident had been saved to a backup server.
Claire pressed play.
The video began at 2:13 p.m.
Maya appeared beside Oliver’s crib, checking his temperature.
She gave him medicine and read him a picture book.
At 2:41, Evelyn entered.
For nearly twenty minutes, the conversation matched Maya’s account.
Evelyn questioned her.
Maya tried to remain calm.
Then Evelyn produced the custody documents.
The camera had no clear audio from across the room, but Evelyn’s body language changed when Maya refused to sign.
At 3:08, Evelyn removed the inhaler from the emergency case.
She placed it inside her purse.
Ryan’s jaw tightened.
At 3:15, Oliver began coughing.
Maya searched for the inhaler.
Evelyn blocked the doorway.
Then came the struggle.
Maya reached for the purse.
Evelyn shoved her into the dresser.
Maya fell.
Oliver began crying.
Evelyn slapped Maya once, then again.
Afterward, she lifted the broken lamp and placed it closer to Maya.
She swept medicine bottles from the changing table.
Finally, she knelt in front of the camera and stared directly into the lens.
Ryan felt sick.
“She knew exactly where it was,” he said.
Claire advanced the footage.
Evelyn took out her phone.
The audio became clearer when she moved closer to the closet.
“It’s done,” she said.
A man answered through the speaker.
“Did she sign?”
“No.”
“Then we use the recording.”
Evelyn looked toward Maya, who was holding Oliver on the floor.
“Ryan will believe me.”
The male voice replied, “He always does.”
Ryan recognized it.
Daniel Cross.
Claire stopped the video.
No one spoke for several seconds.
Then Ryan asked, “Can we give this to the police?”
“I already made three copies.”
Maya covered her mouth as tears filled her eyes.
Ryan reached for her hand, but she pulled away.
Not in anger.
In pain.
The recording had proven she was telling the truth.
But it had also proven how completely Ryan had been expected to doubt her.
Detective Ortiz watched the footage that afternoon.
She issued warrants for Evelyn and Daniel.
Daniel disappeared before police reached his office.
Evelyn was found at the Whitmore estate, seated calmly in the library.
She surrendered without resistance.
As officers placed her in handcuffs, she asked to speak with Ryan.
He refused.
Then Ortiz received a call from the district attorney.
Evelyn had requested an emergency court hearing.
