Chapter 3: The Family Secret That Exploded Everything

Victoria finally lost control.

“That’s impossible!” she shouted. “She was born in a group home! I checked—”

Vance turned slowly toward her.

“And who signed the approval for that file?” he asked.

Silence.

Victoria hesitated.

Just one second.

But it was enough.

Vance saw it.

“You did.”

The room exploded in gasps.

Victoria’s face twisted.

“That file was sealed—”

“By you,” Vance cut in. “After you inherited control of the Langford military logistics division.”

Maya stared at her mother-in-law.

Slowly understanding.

“No…” she whispered.

Victoria’s mask cracked completely.

“You don’t understand!” she snapped. “That research was illegal! If the world knew what her mother created—”

Vance stepped forward.

“Then you erased a child to protect your position.”

Security moved in behind Victoria.

But she wasn’t looking at them.

She was looking at Maya now.

Something between hatred and panic in her eyes.

“She was never meant to exist outside the program,” Victoria said sharply. “She carries data in her bloodstream—”

Vance interrupted.

“She carries proof.”

A beat of silence.

Then everything happened at once.

Victoria lunged.

Not at Maya.

At the broken pendant.

Trying to crush what remained of it.

But Vance grabbed her wrist instantly.

“Too late,” he said coldly.

The microchip in his hand beeped.

Once.

Twice.

Then projected a holographic file onto the wall.

Names.

Dates.

Experiments.

And one final line:

SUBJECT ZERO — SURVIVAL CONFIRMED

Maya stared at it.

Her whole body trembling.

“I just wanted a normal life…” she whispered.

Vance softened slightly.

“You were never meant to have a normal life,” he said.

A pause.

Then:

“But you’re going to have one anyway.”

Security pulled Victoria away as she screamed.

But no one was listening anymore.

Because the truth had already escaped.

May you like

And nothing in that room—

Would ever go back to normal again.
