CHAPTER 2: THE SECRET BURIED FOR TWENTY YEARS

The mansion was silent after Victoria was escorted away.
Emma sat in the nursery holding her son while Daniel paced the hallway outside.
He should have felt relieved.
Instead, a strange uneasiness lingered in his chest.
Something about Victoria's terrified expression before she left kept bothering him.
She had looked afraid.
Not because she lost her money.
Not because she lost her power.
But because she feared something else was about to be discovered.
The answer arrived the next morning.
Margaret, the elderly housekeeper, requested a private meeting.
Daniel and Emma met her in the library.
The old woman carried a worn leather box.
Her hands trembled.
"I should have spoken years ago," she whispered.
Daniel frowned.
"About what?"
Margaret opened the box.
Inside were old photographs, hospital records, and several letters.
One photograph immediately caught Daniel's attention.
It showed his late father standing beside a young woman he had never seen before.
The woman was holding a newborn baby.
"Who is she?" Daniel asked.
Margaret's eyes filled with tears.
"Her name was Sarah."
Emma felt a chill.
Margaret continued.
"Before your father married Victoria, he was engaged to Sarah."
Daniel stared at the photograph.
"What happened to her?"
"She died."
The room fell silent.
Margaret swallowed hard.
"At least... that's what Victoria wanted everyone to believe."
Daniel's face darkened.
"What are you saying?"
Margaret handed him one of the letters.
It was written in his father's handwriting.
Daniel's hands shook as he read.
The letter revealed everything.
Sarah had never abandoned the family.
She had never betrayed his father.
Victoria had fabricated lies to separate them.
Then she bribed hospital staff to falsify records after Sarah gave birth.
The newborn child had been declared dead.
But the child wasn't dead.
The baby had been secretly taken away.
Daniel looked up.
His voice barely worked.
"The child survived?"
Margaret nodded.
"Yes."
Emma covered her mouth.
Daniel's heart pounded.
"Who was the child?"
Margaret's answer changed everything.
"You."
The room spun.
Daniel could hardly breathe.
Victoria was not his mother.
She had stolen his inheritance.
Stolen his identity.
And stolen twenty years of truth.
Everything he believed about his life was built on a lie.
For a long moment nobody spoke.
Then Daniel stood.
His eyes burned with determination.
"We're finding out what really happened."
For the first time in twenty years, the Hartwell family's darkest secret was finally uncovered.

But one question remained.
What had happened to Sarah?
