Chapter 1: The Slap Beside the Crib

The slap echoed through the nursery.

Emma never saw it coming.

One moment she was standing beside her baby’s crib, holding a framed family photograph. The next, she was falling to the floor, her cheek burning with pain as the frame shattered against the hardwood.

The baby stirred softly in the crib.

A warm nightlight glowed in the corner of the room.

Emma's trembling fingers reached for the torn photograph lying among the broken glass. Tears blurred her vision as she clutched the picture to her chest.

Standing over her was Victoria Hartwell.

Her husband's stepmother.

To the outside world, Victoria was elegance itself—graceful, charitable, and respected by everyone who knew her.

Inside the Hartwell mansion, however, she was something very different.

Victoria looked down at Emma with cold contempt.

"Stop crying."

Her voice was sharp enough to cut.

"And don't forget who you are."

Emma lowered her eyes.

Victoria took another step closer.

"In this house, you're nothing without my son."

The words hit harder than the slap.

For years, Emma had endured the insults.

The humiliation.

The endless reminders that she came from a family Victoria considered beneath the Hartwell name.

She tolerated it because she loved her husband.

She tolerated it because she wanted her son to grow up in a complete family.

But today felt different.

Today, something inside her was breaking.

Victoria kicked a piece of the broken frame across the floor.

"You're lucky Daniel married you at all."

Emma's eyes filled with tears.

The photograph she held was the first family picture taken after their son was born.

Now it was torn in half.

Just like her heart.

"Look at me when I'm speaking to you," Victoria snapped.

Emma slowly raised her head.

The red mark on her cheek was already beginning to darken.

"I've never done anything to hurt you," she whispered.

"Don't call me family."

Victoria's face twisted with anger.

"You will never belong here."

The nursery fell silent.

Only the soft breathing of the baby could be heard.

Then—

BANG!

The nursery door burst open.

Both women turned.

A tall figure stood in the doorway.

Daniel Hartwell.

For a moment, nobody moved.

His eyes swept across the room.

The shattered frame.

The broken glass.

The tears on Emma's face.

The red handprint on her cheek.

Everything became perfectly clear.

One second.

That was all it took.

The rage exploded inside him.

"Emma."

His voice was low and dangerous.

He crossed the room in seconds and dropped to his knees beside her.

His hand gently touched her injured cheek.

The moment he saw her flinch, his jaw tightened.

"Who did this?"

Emma couldn't answer.

She didn't need to.

Daniel slowly looked up.

His eyes locked onto Victoria.

For the first time in her life, Victoria felt fear.

"Daniel, you've misunderstood—"

"Did you hit my wife?"

The question was ice cold.

Victoria forced a laugh.

"I was only teaching her some respect."

The next moment happened so fast she barely saw it coming.

Daniel stood and shoved her away from Emma.

Victoria stumbled backward and crashed into a side table.

A crystal vase toppled over.

Water spilled across the floor.

Several framed family photos slid off the table and shattered beside her.

The room erupted into chaos.

"Daniel!" Victoria screamed.

But he wasn't listening anymore.

The commotion had drawn others to the nursery.

The door opened again.

Several staff members appeared.

Among them was Margaret, the longtime housekeeper.

Daniel turned toward her.

His voice was steady.

"You knew about this?"

Margaret froze.

Victoria's face immediately went pale.

"Margaret, don't you dare say a word."

The elderly housekeeper looked at Emma's bruised face.

Then she lowered her head.

Tears filled her eyes.

"I'm sorry, sir."

Daniel's expression darkened.

Margaret continued.

"I've seen it happen."

The room became silent.

Victoria stopped breathing.

Margaret's voice trembled.

"I've seen Mrs. Hartwell insult her, threaten her, and hurt her many times over the years."

Emma closed her eyes.

Daniel's hands curled into fists.

The truth was finally out.

The woman who played the role of a gentle lady in public had been exposed inside her own home.

Victoria pointed at Margaret.

"You're lying!"

But nobody believed her anymore.

Not after what they had just witnessed.

Not after the evidence standing in front of them.

Daniel stared at his stepmother.

The disappointment in his eyes was worse than anger.

It was final.

Without another word, he pulled out his phone.

Victoria suddenly felt a chill run through her body.

"Daniel... what are you doing?"

He ignored her.

The call connected.

"This is Daniel Hartwell."

The room listened in stunned silence.

"Freeze all of Victoria Hartwell's personal accounts immediately."

Victoria's knees nearly gave out.

Daniel continued.

"Remove her from every position she holds in the family company."

His voice never wavered.

"And revoke all access privileges to this house. Effective tonight."

A pause.

Then a response from the other end.

"Understood, Mr. Hartwell."

The call ended.

Victoria stared at him in horror.

"You can't do this."

Daniel looked at her with eyes she no longer recognized.

"I just did."

In a single moment, she lost everything.

Her money.

Her influence.

Her authority.

Her control over the family.

All gone.

Because of one slap.

One furious son.

May you like

One terrible mistake.

And Victoria had no idea that an even darker secret was about to surface—a secret buried for twenty years, one that could destroy the entire Hartwell empire forever.
