Chapter 4 — The Child Who Shouldn’t Remember

The next morning, Margaret Whitmore requested only one thing.
Nathaniel alone.
No staff.
No Vivien.
When the room emptied, she reached for his hand with surprising strength.
“She didn’t push me,” Margaret said immediately.
Nathaniel’s eyes narrowed slightly.
“Then what happened?”
Margaret hesitated.
For the first time, the proud Whitmore matriarch looked uncertain.
“She was behind me,” she said. “But I didn’t fall because of her.”
A breath.
“She was blocking someone else.”
Nathaniel’s jaw tightened.
“Who?”
Margaret’s gaze shifted toward the doorway.
Rosa stood there.
And behind her—
Lily.
The child stepped forward slowly, clutching her wooden blocks.
She didn’t look at Nathaniel.
She looked at the space beside him.
As if someone else was standing there.
And then she whispered:
“There was another lady on the stairs.”
Silence hit the room like a blade.
Nathaniel slowly turned his head toward the empty staircase outside the door.
Vivien wasn’t there.
But for the first time…
He wasn’t sure she had ever been alone.
And Lily added, almost too softly to hear:
“She told me not to tell Daddy.”
