Chapter 3 — The Sound of a Lie

That night, Nathaniel did something he hadn’t done in years.

He stopped trusting silence.

He replayed the mansion’s internal logs himself.

Firewall access.

Network interruptions.

Security overrides.

And there it was.

A manual override executed from inside the house.

Not from a server room.

Not from staff credentials.

From a personal device registered under:

Vivien Cole

Nathaniel leaned back slowly in his chair.

No reaction.

No anger.

Just calculation tightening like a locked door.

In the hallway outside, footsteps paused.

Vivien.

She didn’t knock immediately.

She waited.

Then entered.

“Your mother is awake,” she said softly.

Nathaniel closed the laptop.

“Good,” he replied.

Another pause.

Then, carefully:

“She didn’t mention me… did she?”

That was the mistake.

The first crack.

Nathaniel stood.

Slow.

Controlled.

“I didn’t say she did.”

Silence stretched between them.

And somewhere down the hallway, Lily’s small voice echoed faintly.

“Mama… don’t lie.”

May you like

Vivien turned sharply.

But no one was there.
