CHAPTER 7 – The Blackout

The ballroom disappeared into darkness.

Someone screamed.

Another guest dropped a tray of champagne glasses, sending crystal shattering across the marble floor.

"Emergency lights!" Detective Laura Bennett shouted.

Within seconds, dim red lights flickered to life along the walls.

The elegant ballroom was transformed into a ghostly maze of shadows.

Richard's security team reacted immediately.

"Form a perimeter!"

Four officers surrounded Vivienne and the steel lockbox.

No one would get close this time.

The countdown on the lockbox continued.

09:17... 09:16... 09:15...

Its small digital screen glowed green in the darkness.

Vivienne couldn't take her eyes off it.

"If I don't enter the right birthday..."

"What happens?"

The forensic technician checked the device.

"I don't know."

"But judging by the circuitry..."

"It won't simply lock."

Richard frowned.

"You think it'll erase the contents?"

The technician nodded.

"I believe that's exactly what Theodore designed."

Meanwhile, electricians rushed toward the hotel's control room.

Five minutes later, one of them called over the radio.

"This wasn't a power outage."

Detective Bennett grabbed the radio.

"What do you mean?"

"Someone deliberately cut power to the ballroom."

"Can you restore it?"

"We're trying."

Richard looked toward the broken emergency exit.

"They're still here."

Detective Bennett nodded.

"The masked men?"

"Yes."

"They failed to steal the lockbox."

"So now they want what's inside destroyed."

Dominic stood alone near the stage.

His mind replayed the evening over and over.

His wife had been humiliated.

His sister had framed her.

His mother was under criminal investigation.

Now...

His late father appeared to have left behind secrets capable of changing everything.

He barely recognized his own family anymore.

Rachel, the wedding planner, hurried into the ballroom carrying an old leather binder.

"Mr. Ashford!"

Richard looked up.

"What is it?"

"The hotel archives."

"I searched every executive record connected to Theodore Hawthorne."

She opened the binder.

"One document was sealed."

"Until tonight."

Richard took it.

The paper inside was yellow with age.

At the top, in Theodore's handwriting, were the words:

IF VIVIENNE EVER OPENS THE VAULT... TELL HER TO TRUST NO HAWTHORNE.

Dominic's heart stopped.

"No Hawthorne?"

He whispered.

"That includes..."

"My family."

Vivienne looked at her husband.

For the first time...

She didn't feel anger.

Only sadness.

How many warnings had existed before tonight?

How many signs had gone unnoticed?

The countdown reached 05:00.

The room grew more tense by the second.

Richard suddenly remembered something.

"The hospital."

Everyone looked at him.

"When the fire happened..."

"The nurses gave us a bracelet."

Vivienne frowned.

"My baby bracelet?"

Richard nodded.

"It had your birth date."

"But..."

He stopped speaking.

"But what?"

"It wasn't handwritten."

"It was printed."

Detective Bennett's eyes narrowed.

"So it could have been replaced."

Richard nodded slowly.

"Yes."

Just then, one of the hotel's elderly employees stepped into the ballroom.

He looked to be nearly eighty.

His name tag read:

Samuel – Concierge

"I heard Theodore Hawthorne's name."

Richard immediately recognized him.

"Sam?"

The old man smiled sadly.

"I never thought I'd see this day."

"You knew Theodore?"

"I knew everything."

The room fell silent.

Samuel slowly reached into his coat pocket.

He removed an old photograph.

It showed two newborn babies lying side by side in a hospital nursery.

On the back, someone had written:

Baby A
Baby B

Samuel handed the photograph to Vivienne.

"I was there after the fire."

"There weren't one..."

"...there were two missing baby bracelets."

Richard stared at the photo.

"What?"

Samuel nodded.

"The hospital never told the public."

"They quietly replaced both identification bands."

Vivienne's breathing became shallow.

"Two babies..."

Samuel looked directly at her.

"One belonged to the Ashford family."

"The other..."

He turned toward Dominic.

"...belonged to the Hawthorne family."

No one spoke.

Then Samuel delivered the sentence that changed everything.

"They always believed only one child had been switched."

He shook his head slowly.

"They were wrong."

Both babies went home with the wrong parents.

At that exact moment—

The lockbox let out another electronic chime.

The countdown stopped.

The screen displayed a single line of text:

IDENTITY UPDATE DETECTED.

DNA VERIFICATION REQUIRED.

Richard and Dominic looked at one another.

Neither man had ever imagined the same terrifying possibility.

What if...

Neither family knew who their real child was?
