CHAPTER 3 – The Ring Was Never the Real Crime

Amanda froze with one hand on the ballroom door.
Two security officers stood between her and the exit.
Neither raised a hand.
Neither needed to.
The look on Amanda's face told everyone everything.
Behind her, the massive LED screen replayed the footage in slow motion.
The server brushed against Chloe.
The diamond ring slipped from the bouquet.
Amanda looked around.
She bent down.
She picked it up.
Then quietly tucked it into her silver purse.
No one spoke.
The only sound in the ballroom was Amanda's uneven breathing.
Finally, Chloe found her voice.
"Amanda..."
Her cousin slowly turned around, tears already filling her eyes.
"I... I was going to give it back."
Richard Ashford didn't blink.
"When?"
Amanda swallowed.
"After the reception."
Richard glanced at one of his investigators.
"Search the purse."
Amanda didn't resist.
Within seconds, the investigator unzipped the silver handbag.
He reached inside.
A velvet jewelry pouch emerged.
He opened it.
The ballroom lights reflected brilliantly off the enormous diamond.
"There it is," he announced.
A collective gasp swept through the guests.
The missing ring had never been anywhere near Vivienne.
Chloe rushed forward.
"You idiot!"
She snatched the ring from the investigator.
"What were you thinking?"
Amanda burst into tears.
"You told me to!"
Silence.
Every head turned toward Chloe.
Her smile disappeared.
"What?"
Amanda shook uncontrollably.
"You said..."
"...if the ring disappeared for a few minutes..."
"...everyone would finally see Vivienne for who she really is."
The room fell deathly quiet.
Eleanor's face turned white.
"Amanda!"
"Stop talking!"
But Amanda couldn't.
"I didn't want to..."
"I only agreed because Chloe promised she'd tell everyone the truth afterward."
"I never thought Aunt Eleanor would tear her dress..."
"I never thought everyone would treat her like..."
Amanda looked toward Vivienne and broke down completely.
"I'm so sorry."
The guests erupted.
"Did she just admit it?"
"They planned this?"
"My God..."
"She framed her."
Photographers who had been taking wedding portraits moments earlier now aimed every camera toward Chloe.
Flash after flash illuminated the ballroom.
Chloe tried to shield her face.
"No pictures!"
It was far too late.
Dominic stared at his sister.
His lips trembled.
"Tell me she's lying."
Chloe looked everywhere except at him.
"Dominic..."
"Tell me."
She remained silent.
That silence answered everything.
Dominic slowly stepped backward.
His own sister had orchestrated the humiliation of his pregnant wife.
And he had helped.
Not by acting...
But by doing nothing.
Richard finally spoke.
"The stolen ring was a lie."
"The public humiliation was intentional."
"My daughter was physically assaulted."
He looked toward his attorney.
"Record that."
The attorney nodded.
"Already documented."
Richard continued.
"There are approximately two hundred eyewitnesses."
"More than twenty professional photographers."
"Complete surveillance footage."
"And now..."
He looked directly at Amanda.
"...a confession."
The attorney calmly closed his notebook.
"An exceptionally strong case."
Eleanor suddenly forced herself to smile.
"Now hold on."
"It was only a misunderstanding."
Richard turned toward her.
"A misunderstanding?"
"Yes."
"No one meant any real harm."
Richard slowly walked closer.
His expression never changed.
"You called my daughter 'cheap trash.'"
"You accused her of theft."
"You ripped apart her clothing."
"You humiliated her in front of hundreds of people."
"You endangered both her and my unborn grandchild."
He paused.
"And you call that..."
"...a misunderstanding?"
Eleanor couldn't answer.
The hotel manager quietly approached Richard.
"Sir."
"The police have arrived."
Richard nodded once.
"Invite them in."
Chloe gasped.
"The police?"
"Why?"
Richard looked at her.
"I didn't call them because of the ring."
Everyone frowned.
"Then... why?"
His answer chilled the room.
"I called them because my pregnant daughter was assaulted."
Two uniformed officers entered the ballroom.
Behind them walked Detective Laura Bennett, head of the city's Major Crimes Division.
She immediately recognized Richard.
"Mr. Ashford."
Richard extended his hand.
"Detective."
She shook it firmly.
"I came as quickly as I could."
She looked around the devastated ballroom.
"What happened?"
Richard gestured toward the giant screen.
"The video speaks for itself."
Detective Bennett watched the recording once.
Then again.
When it ended, she turned toward Eleanor.
"Ma'am..."
"I'm placing you under investigation for assault."
Eleanor's mouth fell open.
"What?"
"You forcibly tore another person's clothing while she was eight months pregnant."
"I didn't hurt her!"
The detective remained calm.
"That will be determined through the investigation."
She nodded toward another officer.
"Please take everyone's statements."
As officers began separating witnesses, Rachel, the wedding planner, quietly approached Richard again.
"There... there's something else."
Richard looked at her.
"What is it?"
Rachel hesitated.
"I almost didn't notice."
She handed him a small envelope.
"It was delivered to the front desk this afternoon."
"It says..."
She looked toward Vivienne.
"...'For Mrs. Vivienne Ashford Only.'"
Vivienne frowned.
"I've never seen that before."
Richard opened the envelope carefully.
Inside was a single photograph.
An old photograph.
It showed Richard...
Standing beside a younger man.
A man Vivienne recognized instantly.
Dominic's late father.
On the back, written in faded black ink, were eight chilling words:
"The wedding was only the beginning. Check the vault."
Richard's calm expression disappeared for the first time that night.
He stared at the photograph.
May you like
Then whispered only one sentence.
"...Impossible."
