Chapter 18 - THE FALSE VICTORY

The wedding recording was not what I expected.
It had been captured accidentally by Adrian’s phone.
The device apparently remained active after he ended another recording.
I heard music.
Guests.
Glasses.
Then Charles.
“You did well.”
Adrian answered.
“She trusts me.”
My chest tightened.
Charles laughed quietly.
“That was the hard part.”
Then Adrian said something neither of us expected.
“I’m not doing this anymore.”
Silence followed.
Charles’s voice hardened.
“You know what this family has invested.”
“I married her.”
“That was the assignment.”
“I know.”
“I’m saying it changed.”
For several seconds there was only background noise.
Then Adrian said,
“I’m not taking the condo.”
Charles responded coldly.
“You’ll do what this family requires.”
The recording ended.
I listened twice.
It did not absolve Adrian.
But it complicated the story.
He had been sent to me.
Then somewhere along the way, he had tried to step away.
And eventually failed.
Maybe Eleanor was right about one thing.
Maybe Adrian really had loved me.
But love that surrendered whenever family pressure arrived was never safe enough to build a life on.
Adrian’s attorney requested another conversation.
This time I agreed.
He looked terrible.
Older.
Smaller.
For years he had filled rooms because the Caldwell name filled them for him.
Without it, he looked ordinary.
“I tried to stop,” he said.
“I heard the recording.”
His eyes filled.
“I should have told you.”
“Yes.”
“I thought I could separate you from that part of the family.”
“You brought me to the dinner.”
His face collapsed.
“Yes.”
“You knew what they wanted.”
“Yes.”
“You knew what happened to Maya.”
He closed his eyes.
“Yes.”
“And when I refused, you hit me.”
A long silence.
“Yes.”
I stood.
“Then there is nothing else to discuss.”
“Claire.”
I stopped at the door.
“I loved you.”
I looked back.
“I believe you.”
His face changed.
That answer hurt him more than anger would have.
Then I finished.
“And that is what should haunt you.”
Outside, Rachel was waiting.
For one moment, it felt finished.
Charles arrested.
Eleanor under investigation.
The lien removed.
Maya cooperating.
Adrian admitting the truth.
Then Rachel’s phone rang.
She listened.
Her expression darkened.
“What?”
She covered the phone.
“Charles’s attorneys are challenging the tunnel evidence.”
My stomach sank.
“On what basis?”
“Search scope.”
“And if they win?”
“Some of the strongest evidence could be excluded.”
The Caldwells were down.
May you like
But they were not finished.
