Chapter 14 - THE BETRAYAL

The threat did not frighten me into silence.

It made the conspiracy easier to understand.

Someone had been watching us long before Adrian lifted the plate.

Detective Reed assigned extra patrols.

Federal investigators took possession of the photographs.

Maya moved to a protected location with her children.

Rachel temporarily worked from another office.

Then Graham disappeared again.

This time he took his passport.

At 6:20 the next morning, authorities located his SUV at San Francisco International Airport.

He never boarded a plane.

Instead, surveillance footage showed him meeting a man inside a parking structure.

Graham handed the man a padded envelope.

The man handed Graham a set of keys.

Investigators identified him within hours.

Martin Shaw.

Senior partner at the law firm that had represented Caldwell companies for twenty-two years.

Police searched Shaw’s office.

The MASTER INDEX drive was found inside a locked drawer.

Graham had betrayed Maya.

Again.

When Reed told her, Maya said nothing for nearly a minute.

Then she asked one question.

“Did he take money?”

“No.”

“Then why?”

“His attorney says Graham believed Shaw could negotiate protection for the children.”

Maya laughed bitterly.

“The children.”

She looked at me.

“That is always what he says when he chooses his family over us.”

Graham was arrested for interfering with the investigation.

Shaw was questioned.

And the recovered drive changed the case immediately.

It contained a directory called FAMILY SECURITY.

Inside were payments to investigators.

Consultants.

Attorneys.

And one private security company.

That company had taken the photographs left outside my condo.

Another folder contained surveillance logs.

My name appeared eighty-seven times.

They had followed me for nearly a year.

Not because I was dangerous.

Because I owned something they wanted.

Then investigators found the most damaging file yet.

An audio recording made two days before the dinner.

Eleanor was speaking.

Adrian answered.

Eleanor said,

“She will say no.”

Adrian responded,

“I know.”

Then Eleanor asked,

“Are you prepared to finish this tonight?”

There was a long pause.

Adrian answered.

“Yes.”

The recording ended.

My hands became cold.

Detective Reed looked at me.

“We don’t know exactly what she meant by finish.”

I did.

Not necessarily the plate.

Not necessarily physical violence.

Something broader.

They had decided the night would end with my surrender.

My signature.

My silence.

Or my marriage.

May you like

The only outcome they had never planned for was mine.
