Chapter 15 – Wait for Me

Two years after the airport goodbye, Natalie returned to Dulles International Airport with Tyler.
This time, no security guards watched them.
No attorneys waited by the entrance.
No black vehicles followed them through traffic.
Tyler was fifteen now. He was taller than Natalie and had begun wearing Michael’s old watch, the one item recovered after the construction accident.
They were traveling to Chicago, where Tyler had been invited to speak at a youth advocacy conference about financial abuse and coercive control.
He had almost declined.
Then he learned that the audience would include children trapped in custody battles involving powerful parents.
“I kept thinking about how alone I felt,” he told Natalie. “Maybe one of them needs to know someone will believe them.”
At the security line, they passed the exact place where Tyler had once slipped the black card into her coat.
Natalie stopped.
Tyler noticed.
“You’re thinking about that day.”
“Yes.”
“I thought you might run after me.”
“I almost did.”
“I wanted you to.”
“Then why did you tell me to wait?”
Tyler looked toward the gates.
“Because Dad expected you to fight immediately. He had police reports ready. He had attorneys waiting. If you tried to stop us at the airport, he would have had you arrested.”
“You knew all that?”
“Not everything. But I knew he wanted you to react.”
Natalie smiled sadly.
“So you asked me to do the one thing that was hardest for me.”
“Trust you.”
They moved forward with the line.
Before entering security, Tyler turned and wrapped his arms around her, just as he had two years earlier.
But this time, his hand did not slip anything into her pocket.
There were no secret cards.
No hidden messages.
No whispered warning.
“I’ll meet you at the gate,” he said.
Natalie watched him walk through the scanner.
Halfway to the other side, Tyler turned back.
He smiled.
Not Harrison’s confident, victorious smile.
Tyler’s smile was warm, imperfect, and completely his own.
Natalie remembered the thirteen-year-old boy standing in court, pretending to reject her because he believed it was the only way to protect her.
For years, Harrison had tried to convince them that money decided who deserved love, safety, and a future.
But Harrison’s empire had collapsed.
His allies had testified against him.
His name had been removed from Tyler’s records.
And the child he treated as an asset had become the witness who destroyed everything.
Harrison had once smiled because he believed Tyler had chosen him.
He had never understood that Tyler’s choice had been made long before the courtroom.
Tyler had chosen the mother who taught him compassion.
He had chosen the truth over wealth.
He had chosen courage while he was still terrified.
Most importantly, he had chosen who he wanted to become.
Natalie joined him on the other side of security.
Together, they walked toward their gate.
“Mom?”
“Yes?”
“You know what Dad got wrong?”
“What?”
Tyler slipped his hand into hers.
“He thought he could buy me a future.”
Natalie looked at her son.
“What did you learn?”
Tyler smiled.
“The future was never his to give me.”
Outside the enormous airport windows, the morning sun rose over the runway.
Their flight was waiting.
And for the first time, neither of them was running away.
They were simply moving forward.
May you like
Together.
