Chapter 7: The Truth Behind Richard Vale

For the first time in fifteen years, Ethan Vale questioned everything.
The anger that had carried him forward suddenly became heavier.
Because revenge was simple.
Truth was not.
He had spent months believing the story was clear.
Vanessa was the monster.
Eleanor was the victim.
Richard was the man who had been deceived.
But now another possibility stood in front of him.
A possibility he did not want to accept.
Maybe his father had known more than he admitted.
Maybe the man who apologized for failing him had also hidden his own mistakes.
That night, Ethan found Richard sitting alone in the old study.
The same room where he used to wait as a child for his father to finish business calls.
The same room where Vanessa had quietly taken control of the family.
Richard looked up when Ethan entered.
“You found something.”
It was not a question.
Ethan placed the custody agreement on the desk.
Richard’s expression changed immediately.
For a moment, fear appeared.
Not anger.
Not confusion.
Fear.
“You know about this.”
Richard looked away.
“I was hoping you never would.”
Ethan felt his chest tighten.
“Why?”
Richard remained silent.
“Why were you going to let me believe Mom abandoned me?”
The older man closed his eyes.
“I never wanted that.”
“But it happened.”
The silence that followed was painful.
Richard finally spoke.
“Your mother discovered something about the company.”
“The financial problems.”
Richard nodded.
“Yes.”
Ethan waited.
“What happened?”
Richard stood and walked toward the window.
“When I built the Vale empire, I made decisions I thought were necessary.”
“That’s not an answer.”
Richard sighed.
“I took risks.”
“Illegal risks?”
The question hung in the air.
Richard did not answer immediately.
That was enough.
Ethan stepped back.
“My whole life…”
His voice became colder.
“I thought Vanessa stole my family.”
Richard looked at him.
“She did.”
“But you helped her.”
The words cut deeply.
Richard lowered his head.
“Yes.”
Ethan stared at his father.
The powerful businessman who had controlled thousands of employees.
The man who had appeared fearless to the world.
Now he looked defeated.
“When Eleanor found out, she wanted to leave.”
Richard continued.
“She wanted to protect you.”
“Then why didn’t she?”
Richard’s voice broke.
“Because I was afraid.”
That answer shocked Ethan.
“Afraid of what?”
“Losing everything.”
The truth was uglier than Ethan expected.
Richard had chosen his empire over his family.
And Vanessa had seen that weakness.
“She told me Eleanor was trying to destroy me,” Richard said.
“And you believed her.”
“Yes.”
Richard looked at Ethan.
“I believed her because part of me wanted to believe her.”
The confession was devastating.
Because it was honest.
“I was angry at Eleanor for finding my mistakes.”
Richard swallowed.
“And Vanessa gave me someone to blame.”
Ethan walked away from the desk.
All these years, he had hated one person.
But there were many people responsible for his pain.
Vanessa.
Richard.
Even the people who stayed silent.
The next morning, Ethan and Clara met with the investigators.
They added Richard’s confession to the case.
Not because Ethan wanted revenge against his father.
Because the truth had to include everyone.
When Vanessa heard Richard had admitted his involvement, she laughed.
A cold, bitter laugh.
The investigator sitting across from her looked confused.
“You’re not surprised?”
Vanessa looked at the evidence folder.
“No.”
She leaned back.
“Richard always wanted to be seen as the good man.”
A small smile appeared.
“But good men make mistakes too.”
The investigator watched her carefully.
“And what does that mean?”
Vanessa looked toward the window.
“It means you still don’t know the whole story.”
For the first time, even Ethan realized something.
Vanessa was not fighting to escape anymore.

She was preparing to reveal something.
Something she believed would destroy them all.
