Chapter 6: The Secret Vanessa Kept Hidden

Vanessa Vale had always believed secrets were weapons.

The bigger the secret, the stronger the weapon.

For fifteen years, she had used secrets to control everyone around her.

Richard’s doubts.

Ethan’s pain.

Clara’s fear.

She had collected people’s weaknesses like pieces on a chessboard.

And she had always been the player.

Until now.

The morning after the investigation became public, every major news network was reporting on the Vale scandal.

The headlines were everywhere.

“Billionaire Family Empire Under Investigation.”

“Missing Heiress Case Reopened After Fifteen Years.”

“Former Vale Executive Accused of Fraud and False Imprisonment.”

Vanessa watched the reports from the mansion library.

The same room where she once made decisions that changed people’s lives.

Now she sat alone.

No assistants.

No executives.

No loyal employees waiting for instructions.

Only silence.

But Vanessa was not afraid.

Not yet.

Because she knew something Ethan and Clara did not.

A secret hidden deeper than Eleanor’s disappearance.

A secret involving Richard.

And the true beginning of the Vale family’s destruction.

The lawyer arrived at noon.

Marcus Hill.

Vanessa’s personal attorney for almost twenty years.

He entered the library carrying a thin black envelope.

“You said you had something important.”

Vanessa looked at him.

“I do.”

Marcus placed the envelope on the table.

“You understand this changes everything?”

Vanessa smiled faintly.

“That is why I kept it.”

Inside was a document.

An old agreement.

A marriage contract signed years before Vanessa became Richard Vale’s wife.

But it was not the contract itself that mattered.

It was the name attached to it.

Eleanor Vale.

Marcus looked uncomfortable.

“Are you sure you want to use this?”

Vanessa stared at the paper.

“I have spent fifteen years being called a monster.”

Her voice remained calm.

“Maybe it is time they remember everyone had secrets.”

That evening, Ethan received a message from Marcus Hill.

A request for a private meeting.

He almost refused.

But something about the message bothered him.

It mentioned his mother.

When Ethan arrived, Marcus was waiting in a quiet restaurant away from the media.

“You know who I represent,” Ethan said.

Marcus nodded.

“Vanessa.”

“Then why are you here?”

The lawyer placed a document on the table.

“Because there is something you were never told.”

Ethan stared at the paper.

“What is this?”

“A custody agreement.”

His expression changed.

“Between my parents?”

“Yes.”

Ethan read the document carefully.

His eyes narrowed.

The agreement showed Eleanor had been preparing to leave Richard before her disappearance.

Not because she wanted to abandon Ethan.

Because she wanted to protect him.

“She was planning to take me away?”

Marcus nodded.

“She discovered financial problems inside Richard’s companies.”

Ethan looked up.

“What kind of problems?”

“Problems connected to decisions Richard made before Vanessa entered the family.”

The words stopped him.

“What are you saying?”

Marcus hesitated.

“I’m saying Vanessa did not create every problem.”

A cold feeling moved through Ethan.

“Explain.”

The lawyer leaned forward.

“Your father was not innocent.”

The sentence changed everything.

For years, Ethan had seen the story as simple.

Eleanor was the victim.

Vanessa was the villain.

Richard was the manipulated husband.

But reality was becoming more complicated.

Marcus continued.

“Eleanor found evidence that Richard had hidden financial risks from her.”

Ethan frowned.

“My father?”

“Yes.”

“Why would Vanessa hide this?”

The answer came immediately.

“Because she needed Richard.”

Silence.

Vanessa had not only destroyed Eleanor because she wanted Richard.

She had protected Richard because she needed his empire.

Ethan left the restaurant feeling more confused than before.

When he returned home, Clara was waiting.

One look at his face told her something had happened.

“What did you find?”

Ethan looked at her.

“The story is bigger than we thought.”

Clara became serious.

“What do you mean?”

He handed her the document.

As she read it, her expression changed.

For the first time since they started their fight for justice, they both realized something terrifying.

They had been searching for the truth.

But the truth had layers.

And the deepest layer involved the person they thought they understood most.

Richard Vale.
