Chapter 17 - THE BASEMENT FILE

The abandoned clinic smelled of dust and burned wiring.
Firefighters contained a small fire in the records room.
Rachel was not inside.
She had entered, removed one box, and left through a basement exit.
Investigators found a handwritten inventory.
The missing box contained the original laboratory files from the year Emma was conceived.
Rachel believed those records would prove ownership.
Instead, they revealed another deception.
Emma’s embryo had been created using Rachel’s donated egg and Mark’s genetic contribution.
That much was true.
But Rachel had withdrawn consent before the embryo transfer.
My father bribed Dr. Price to proceed anyway.
Rachel’s signature on the final consent form had been forged.
My daughter existed because my father, my doctor, and possibly my husband had ignored Rachel’s refusal.
I looked at Mark.
“Did you know?”
“No.”
“Do not lie to me again.”
“I knew the donor had changed her mind.”
“I didn’t know it was Rachel.”
“Dr. Price told me the legal department had resolved it.”
“You allowed the transfer anyway.”
“We had already lost two pregnancies.”
“I wanted a child.”
His voice broke.
“I wanted Emma.”
“So you stopped asking questions.”
He nodded.
The truth did not make Rachel’s crimes acceptable.
It did explain the wound beneath them.
She had been used by our parents.
Then silenced.
Then forced to watch me raise a child genetically connected to her.
None of that gave her the right to poison Emma.
But it meant our family had built Emma’s life on a violation and called it love.
Detective Hayes believed Rachel would use the files to contact the media or a court.
She did neither.
Instead, she sent one photograph to Mark.
It showed Emma’s pink suitcase inside a car trunk.
A note appeared beside it.
“Everything is ready this time.”
Emma was still safely inside our home.
The suitcase was evidence of intention, not abduction.
Rachel wanted us to panic.
Mark studied the photograph.
The trunk lining looked familiar.
It belonged to my mother’s old station wagon.
Police had already searched that vehicle.
The car was now stored in an evidence lot.
Investigators reached it within minutes.
The suitcase was inside.
Beneath it was a second phone.
The phone contained scheduled messages, forged travel papers, and a live location signal.
Rachel had made one mistake.
May you like
The signal was not leading away from us.
It was moving directly toward our house.
